Overview

A laugh-out-loud novel about motherhood, life, and the quest for eight hours of sleep.

Event planner and famous blogger Clare Finnegan expected to go back to work after her daughter was born. After all, she worked hard for her success…and it's not like now that she has a child she has to buy a minivan, wear Mom Jeans, and give up her career! Right?

Despite more than a few pounds of baby weight still left to lose, Clare dons her Miss Piggy Pants and returns to work. She plans a swanky Sweet Sixteen party, pulls off a million-dollar golf outing, has to come to terms with her mother's breast cancer, and is left so exhausted that she can’t remember her ATM card’s pin number. Then, after another meeting runs late, and she misses another one of her daughter’s milestones, Clare allows herself to examine an alternate choice: staying home.

“Lipinski’s snappy dialogue and acerbic wit are so engaging, you don’t need a minivan to enjoy this ride.” –Jen Lancaster, New York Times bestselling author

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Young working mothers will relate to Lipinski's (A Bump in the Road) amusing but unsurprising latest. Chicago events planner, popular blogger (Am I Making Myself Clare), and newspaper writer Clare Finnegan dons her black Miss Piggy pants (baby weight!) to return to work after having adorable Sara with cute hubby, Jake. She almost loses her cool when an ex-college flame hires her to plan a society golf function. Clare's also worrying about her friend Reese divorcing husband Matt; her mother battling breast cancer; and the commitment of buying a house. It's all there, but Clare's life via Lipinski's jittery prose reads more like a journal of teenage blog posts than an adult novel. Although it captures the angst of the almost-30 mom finding her way, the manic glee is just too self-aware and giddy (“...This Day Needs to Come to Life So I Can Painfully Kill It”). (May)
From the Publisher
More Praise for Maureen Lipinski

“A tasty dish of chick lit." —Chicago Sun-Times

“After having her first baby, Clare Finnegan struggles with the eternal question—can she still have it all…?  The answer is yes, as long as she’s okay with sleep deprivation and elastic waist pants…a snarky and hilarious look at the struggle to maintain balance without losing oneself.” —Jen Lancaster, New York Times bestselling author of Pretty in Plaid, Such a Pretty Fat, and Bitter Is the New Black

“Witty, wonderfully written…what a great new voice on the women’s fiction scene.”—Susan Reinhardt, author of Not Tonight, Honey: Wait ’til I’m a Size 6

"I love the comic 'jean-ious' that is Maureen Lipinski. Her flashback-inducing depiction of life as a new mom had me alternating between laughter and tears, recalling my own not-ready-for-mom-jeans years."—Jenny Gardiner, author of Sleeping with Ward Cleaver and Winging It: A Memoir of Caring for a Vengeful Parrot Who's Determined to Kill Me

    Liked - didnt love

I have to be honest .... this book was a little blah for me - it just seemed more drug out and I didnt laugh near as often as I did while reading From Happy Hour to Baby Shower - I liked the book, not a wast of time - Just didnt provide like I had thought it would.

    Entertaining

Yes, it's a bit trite. And yes, it has sad elements. Overall, though, this is a fairly entertaining book about a new mom whos pregnancy wasn't planned and her struggle to reasses her life as she knows it. And who hasn't struggled with more than one probblem at a time? Whose life is so well managed that trouble line up so you can deal with them one at a time? If anything, I thought the characters, or at least Clare, had real depth and relateability.

If you're looking for something laugh-out-loud funny, this probably isn't it. If you're looking for a book with some deep and hiden meaning, probably you should look elsewhere. If, however, you want an easy, relaxing read that reminds you that you are not alone in your struggle to assimilate to changes and is both charming and real, give this a go.

    Not funny

When I buy a book that is billed as humor I do NOT want to read about breast cancer. I stopped reading at that point and deleted the book. Up to that point the book was nothing special; just the same old "new mom coping with work" story. I never even cracked a smile.
