Children's Literature - Gisela Jernigan
Humorous watercolors and a brief, lively text show and tell us what happens when a young girl, Louise, wraps and leaves Christmas gifts under the tree for her family. Unfortunately, (at least for the gifts), Louise's eager, biscuit-loving dog Walter, sniffs out his gift of special dog biscuits and chews up wrappings and other gifts to get at them. Luckily, with a little help from Santa, all turns out well by Christmas morning.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 3A lively picture book that stars Walter, the family dog, and his young mistress, Louise, in a series of holiday misadventures. In the first chapter, the dog gets intoand chews upall of the girl's handmade and carefully wrapped presents. Predictably, chapter two opens with Walter in the doghouse. Still, he follows the family into the woods to look for a Christmas tree. Good thing, too, because Louise gets lost and Walter finds her. In the final episode, Walter sneaks downstairs to investigate the new presents that Louise has left under the tree. And who should be there? Well, Walter's not sure, but he wears a red suit and gives him a bone before swooping back up the chimney. With humor and warmth, Christelow expresses the family's cozy relationships and preholiday excitement. The watercolor and pen-and-ink cartoons are filled with appealing charactersespecially Louise, an intrepid young lady, hands on hips and garbed in a blue, polka-dot bathrobe and yellow boots, who stands angrily in front of the doghouse containing a chagrined Walter. Don't wait for Christmas to share this entertaining romp one-on-one or in a family read-aloud.
Kirkus Reviews
From the author of What Do Authors Do? (1995), etc., three thin stories that appear in picture-book form, divided into chapters and with dialogue right out of an easy reader.

Industrious Louise makes Christmas gifts for the members of her household, then shops for a dog biscuit for her dog, Walter. Overnight he ruins all the packages looking for his gift. Louise's ire lasts until the middle of the second story, when she gets lost while the family looks for a Christmas tree in the woods, and Walter finds her. In the third story, Walter witnesses Santa's visit and gets an extra bone. Although the illustrations brim with cheer, the book's content will satisfy only the youngest, most unquestioning readers; the characters lack personality, and the first and funniest incident can't support the other, flatter episodes.
