Overview

Steven Ashton, a billionaire from New York, and Emily Grant, on the run from the law... and when they meet he can't help falling for her. What he doesn't know is that interfering in her life will put his own life in danger.

Not What She Seems holds you in suspense from the moment you begin down the path of murder and romance.

Synopsis:
When billionaire Steven Ashton couldn't stand his high society social life anymore, he left the stress of New York on a vacation for his soul. The need to meet real down to earth people led him to a small Nebraska town he remembered visiting as a child. He didn't want to lie about who he was, but he couldn't exactly tell them the truth.

Emily could have easily fallen in love with Steven, under different circumstances, but her past was catching up with her and she needed a new life. If the authorities found out about her, she could lose the one thing that meant everything, her four year old son.

Not What She Seems is approximately 67,000 words long.

This book is a "sweet" romantic suspense, appropriate for all ages.

Storyline: It started off really well and grabbed my attention right away; at times it was difficult to put down and I nearly missed my bus stop a couple of times on the way to work. (This would have definitely been no bueno because I am not a morning person and having to do any extra walking in the morning is not my idea of fun!) The story is easy to follow and there are enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. At the end, Victorine made it obvious what is really going on and, like any movie where the audience is supposed to figure it our before the main characters; the type of thing that makes the reader or viewer want to shake the characters and tell them what's happening! The ending was very nicely done and didn't leave you wondering what happened to this or that character. Except, well, I wish it would have maybe been a tad bit longer just so that we could know how the wedding went. Grammar/Spelling: I noticed some minor grammatical errors and formatting issues. Though, I feel that neither of these took away from the overall enjoyment of Emily and Steven's story. I have a feeling that the formatting issues are mainly due the literal format of the Kindle itself. Character Development: The characters were described in depth and given clear definition with stand alone personalities. They all seemed like people I have known throughout my life. (Well, I haven't known that many billionaires, but I can at least say I've known some decent folks like Steven.) Emily is a beautiful, sincere woman and has done everything she could to keep her son safe. Richard also has moments of likeability and even seems to care a great deal for Emily. I also loved Rose's attempts at match-making and her love for her stubborn husband is sweet; as is his mother's interest in his love life and general happiness. Her character was very well developed and believable. Writing Style: I did have some issues with the lengths of the sentences. I understand that a short, choppy sentence is necessary and, at times, truly helps emphasize the urgency of certain aspects of the characters' situations and story. But, I felt that there were many occasions when the sentences could have been combined for a much smoother reading experience. Also, there were a few instances when it seemed as if the narrative leaned more towards a running inner-monologue. I thought that the differences in Steven's outlook on the situation and Emily's take on the same situation were executed wonderfully. I just felt, at times, that it was difficult to understand whose perception we were reading. Continuity: I did not notice any issues with continuity. Overall Rating: 4+ Overall, I loved the story of two people running from either their past or daily life, only to have both of their lives come screeching to the forefront of everyone's life. I would give this book a solid 4.5 star rating and recommend it to anyone. I know exactly what Victorine meant by a "sweet romance" and hope that this genre really takes off!

Enjoyed reading this book - untill the last 10 pages. It is as if she runs out of paper and or time and the whole story has to end right now. There is even on main person they bring in towards the end of the book that they just kind of leave walking down the hallway - you don't know what happens to him even though the ending certainly effects him. Very dissappointed in the chopped off end.

This was a good book for the price. However, I like to open all the books on my nook so I can see how long they are. This one said 4885 pages and when I turned pages, it turned 250-300 at a time. I have no idea how many actual pages there are. Wonder if that can be fixed.

"Not What She Seems," tells the story of Emily, a small-town girl on the run (I won't give away any spoilers) with her son and best friend from high school. It tells the story of Steven, a high-profile New Yorker who, after an accidental encounter with her, becomes entangled in her complicated life. This was a sweet, romantic tale. The story line was captivating. I can't wait to read more from this author.

I really enjoyed this as one of my first five ebooks to have downloaded. I was looking for new authors who are edgy and have something new to offer. This book delivered in that it is a good read and very enjoyable plot.

...the end. It was quite a lacking ending for such a wonderful read. I agree with other reviewers- it felt like the author was rushing the end to meet a deadline and leaves you feeling a little miffed and cheated in the end. Otherwise- it was a great story full of twists and turns. I for one didn't guess the real bad guy until right before we were told!!

I fought to get to page 97, and then gave up. Written at about a 5th grade reading level. Did not enjoy.

Very enjoyable for an inexpensive book! Emily is a bit naive thinking she's in trouble when she runs away after standing up to her drunk and abusive husband. But there probably wouldn't have been a book if she had.

Once starting this book I couldn't put it down. You just never knew what you were going to get when you turned the page. The only downfall is I wish it would have been a few pages longer to see how Steven, Emily, and Connor started their lives together after getting out of the hospital.

Really wishing there's another book to this, I loved everything about it. The characters just gets to you and you feel like things just can't get any worst. So much drama , heartache and love. This book was just great. GC

I took forever to read this book as it was light reading and was predictible. It was easy to put down! It was a nice story and there were no surprises for me as I had it all figured out. I read alot so I'm not easily impressed.

This book started off at a leisurely pace, giving the reader a chance to get to know the many characters. It didn't take long for me to loath putting it down, however. It is mostly well written, and the suspence in the second half is almost unbearable! I would have given it five stars, but for two things - the occasional switch in verb tense (very annoying when you just want to enjoy the story), and the silliness in the "he / she loves me / loves me not" storyline. Surely two adults (and one author) could find a more elegant way to deal with their feelings for one another. But overall a great read!
