Overview

The bestselling, devastating account of three sisters torn apart, abused and exploited at the hands of a community that robbed them of their childhood. It reveals three lives, separate but entwined, that have experienced unspeakable horror, unrelenting loyalty and unforgettable courage. From as early as three years old, Juliana, Celeste and Kristina were treated as sexual beings by their 'guardians' in the infamous religious cult known as the Children of God. They were made to watch and mimic orgies, received love letters and sexual advances from men old enough to be their grandfather, and were forced into abusive relationships. They were denied access to formal schooling, had to wander the streets begging for money, and were mercilessly beaten for 'crimes' as unpredictable as reading an encyclopaedia. Finally, unable to live with the guilt of what had happened to her children, their mother escaped with Kristina, cutting herself off from her remaining children in a bid to save at least one child. Desperate to save her sisters, Kristina eventually returned to the place of her torture to free Celeste. Years later, Juliana found the courage to escape, knowing that the child she was carrying would be subjected to the same fate if she did not.Now the three sisters have finally come together to reveal in full and horrific detail their existence within the Children of God cult. Their stories reveal a community spread throughout the world and its legacy of anorexia, depression, drug abuse, suicide and even murder. Lives are ripped apart and painstakingly mended with a shared strength that finally enabled the sisters to free themselves from the shadows of their past.

Meet the Author

Kristina, Celeste and Julianna were all born into the cult The Children of God to the same father, David Jones, who remains a member of the organisation. Kristina and Celeste share the same mother. The three girls were separated from each other and their mothers at an early age and lived in various missions throughout the world under the ‘care’ of various foster parents. Both Kristina and Celeste were eventually able to escape the cult and study psychology at university. Julianna remained in the cult until well into her twenties, when falling pregnant provided the catalyst to make her escape. Julianna now works in Uganda, where she remains in contact with her remaining siblings in the cult.

The book is carefully researched in terms of the history of the children of god, and succintly written without dwelling on the 'trauma' of the experience. The authors draw on only what they know and experienced themselves. The voices of the three girls come through clearly, intertwined with their adult selves. I am so very happy for these women that they were able to escape this so-called family to start their new lives outside; but all these horrible memories still are fresh and painful and they will have them forever. Can you imagine? Can you EVEN.....imagine? To the three girls, With this book, you have sent a beacon of hope out to many. Your online site has forums that are helpful to survivors and informational to those who are wanting to help. There are dangerous, damaging, very enticing, and on-the-surface charismatic cults existing everywhere in this world at this very second...and knowing this very fact, if we don't protect our children from their twisted visions, we can and should be held accountable for the damage done to our very own families. Highly recommend this read.

I got this book, because I wanted to know what exactly goes on in polygumist families. It was a shock to my eyes to see what these three girls exactly went though. This book opens your eyes to what happens to these families behind closed doors. My heart breaks for them. I will admit, it is very hard to keep focus on which character is who. I felt like they spent a lot of time skipping from person to person, with ending the first time. I wish each chapter would have seperately been for each sister, and so on. Still though, an amazing story for anyone to read.

Very sad story but one that needed to be told. My heart goes out to them. It was worth the read, one of my favorite books ever read.

Wow. I had never heard of this cult until this book. I couldn't put the book down. Three sister's stories in one book. Absolutely fascinating.

Not Without my sister is a compelling book that gives us insight to cults and pologamist beliefs. I read this book with a heavy heart, and these girls suffered and endured more then anything I've ever heard of, but what's more sickening is that these cults exist in todays world and must be stopped, especially if a child is born into it and doesn't have a chance. My heart goes out to Kristina, Celeste, and Juliana for their bravery, courage, and strength to bring out what happened to them so others could learn about it and public awareness. I'm glad to know that they were strong enough to fight through and free themselves of this horrible life. I'm sure there will always be scars etched forever in their minds, but what a wonderful story on how they thrived and succeeded in life to be productive human beings. God bless you girls.

The author handled difficult subject matter very well, I thought. However, having each child their Own story became hard to follow. Other than that, I liked the book.

Once I was done with the book I was happy that the rapist got caught and they got some god school or what ever . But the sisters don't look the same at all.
