Not Yet Fire

Editorial Reviews

It should come as no surprise, considering Not Yet Fire has such a visual approach to sound, that Zak Riles -- Peace Harbor's mastermind, the man who conceptualized the project, wrote all its songs, and, further, plays nearly all its instruments -- is, in fact, a professional photographer. The artists who have recorded for FILMguerrero have always had a remarkable way of translating distance, particularly wide open spaces and how people move through them, into delicate little sound photographs -- the often wordless short narrative as pop song -- and Peace Harbor is no different on that score no pun intended. To work the analogy even further, there is a hand-held quality to Riles' tunes that allows them to reveal the intimate qualities of sweeping expanses, or rather frames them to such an extent that they tell stories about specific times and places, express individual moods. Although it at times builds to soft, explosive psychedelic crescendos, the music is, in essence, instrumental folk -- particularly resonant in the beautifully fingerpicked passages, the evocative autumnal colors -- with enough twang to tug at your sense of memory. In the process, Riles carves out his own roadwork in subtle and satisfying ways; yet, taking the long view, this is another gorgeous scene added to a collective, ongoing epic movie, its cinematography virtuosic. Not Yet Fire is lovely, simmering stuff.
