Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In a society where women traditionally had "no freedom of thought, no freedom of action, no freedom of love, and no freedom of expression," the editor successfully extracts from Chinese history the stories of approximately 100 legendary women poets, beauties, rulers, dancers, concubines, diplomats, musicians, and warriors. She divides traditional China into six parts and provides an orientation to the dynastic periods within each of the parts to provide a highly valuable reference book for students and teachers in Chinese studies, with information that cannot be found elsewhere. The editor, a professor at Wuhan University who holds an emeritus title at the University of Hawaii, marshalled the talents of approximately 40 scholars around the world to serve on an advisory board to structure the content of the women's biographical entries. Clearly, the aim of this reference work is to reveal the prominent roles of women in a society where women have always been judged by men. Thus, it is not unusual to find recorded history placing women on a continuum ranging from virtuous (for the advice they provided their husbands) to evil (for eliminating those who got in their way). Highly recommended for all academic and public libraries that specialize in Chinese history.--Peggy Spitzer Christoff, Oak Park, IL Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.\
