Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Jane Goodall, Ph.D., CBE Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute and UN Messenger of Peace Angelina is living proof of the power we all have -- every one of us -- to make a difference. I was deeply moved by her descriptions of individual refugees struggling to live with dignity and hope, and found her personal commitment to be an inspiration. Angelina's journals document her awakening as a humanitarian activist and I hope they will move readers to act. I look forward to my continued work with Angelina on behalf of the United Nations.

Introduction

I was asked to write an introduction to my journals, to explain how my journals came to be, why my life took this direction, and why I decided to start it.

As I try to find the answers, I am sure of one thing: I am forever changed. I am so grateful I took this path in my life, thankful that I met these amazing people and had this incredible experience.

I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act.

So the question is not how or why I would do this with my life. The question is, how could I not?

Many nights I sat awake reading stories and statistics about national and international tragedies.

I read about UNHCR:

• More than twenty million refugees exist today.

• One-sixth of the world's population lives on less than one dollar a day.

• 1.1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water.

• One-third of the world has no electricity.

• More than 100 million children are out of school.

• One in six children in Africa dies before the age of five.

I read about different organizations that do humanitarian work. I had been reading about Sierra Leone when I was in England. When I got back to the States it was difficult to follow the stories, so I called USA for UNHCR and asked if they could help me understand the situation there and similar situations elsewhere in the world. Three weeks later I was in Sierra Leone.

I don't know how this will be as a book, how readers will find it. I am not a writer. These are just my journals. They are just a glimpse into a world that I am just beginning to understand, a world I could never really explain in words.

    Amazing

This book helped me put a lot of things into a different perspective for me, I learned a lot. Angelina Jolie was very humble and I enjoyed how passionate she was about her work. This book is in a very personal perspective from Angelina and the refugees that she interviewed and talked with. I appreciated how she gave a background of each of the countries before she discussed her experiences there. It was both discouraging to learn about the horrible living conditions, from a firsthand point of view and encouraging to hear of all that is going on to help refugees. It encourages me to think twice before I spend money on luxury when I know that the same money could possibly help save a life. I would recommend this book to anybody. It's hard to read this book and not feel the same passion and sorrow as Angelina does.

    Incredible

I admire Angelina Jolie so much more since I've read this book. It enlightened me on all the problems we have in our world today. It had me from the first page. The was she told stories about the people she met really got me. The struggles they went through each and every day. I'm not ashamed to say I teared in a few parts. It also included a bit too many statics, but it proved enjoyable all the same. It moved me so much, that one day I hope to visit Africa and Cambodia with UNHCR and try to make a difference. Those refugees' lives depend on it so much. We should all thank the people like Angelina Jolie for volunteering their time to support such a beautiful cause.

Please, after reading this, learn more and help make a change.....it's really that easy to do.

    Opens your eyes

I found Angelina's writing to be a window into a world that is so often missed on the news. She introduced individuals, daily life and the physical problems faced by the majority of the population forced to suffer because of the causes of war. I sensed when she was overwhelmed and exhausted by it and when she was inspired and changed. I think her notes are very precious and her voice very necessary. She is in a position to gain a perspective from every vantage point, to see desperate situations from many angles. So we're privileged to get clarity not usually offered. I appreciated her direct candour and caring attitude greatly. Thank you Angelina

    A good read

I enjoyed this book very much. It proved that Angelina Jolie is human after all, just like us. I wasn't such a big fan of hers until I read her book. Heartbreaking, but a great eye-opener. We need to learn about the other parts of our world, and Angelina did a great job in showing us.

    Definately worth the time

This brought to light the other side of the world that we don't think about. If you stop to think about the trips she takes and the time she devotes you can tell she is really wanting to make a difference. Maybe her celebrity status harms her ability to help or maybe it helps. I know I never would have read this book if it would not have had her name on it. I think this book is an eye into her heart and how kind of a person she really is. She wants to make a difference and she is doing whatever she can in order to do so.

    An Unexpected Surprise

In a society where we value celebrity citings over the news, gossip over gospel and self-indulgence over selflessness, I did not expect to be moved by tales from a high profile movie star. However, Angelina Jolie's story was beautiful and poignant I could not put it down. Inspirational, informative and moving, her experiences put things into perspective. When I picked up this book, I expected the scripted, stereotypical ¿ranting¿ of any Hollywood hotshot the words that I read were heartfelt and sincere. It helped me appreciate the many things in my life that I take for granted. A real gift.

Amidst the suffering... she is there.

Actress, Angelina Jolie volunteered with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and traveled to Africa, Cambodia, Pakistan and Ecuador. Notes from My Travels, are her journals she wrote while she was helping and they are truly inspiring. She states that she isn't a writer and although she does not write like Shakespeare, her compassion shows through the words she chose in her writing. Jolie says, ¿I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act. So the question is not how or why I would do this with my life. The question is, how could I not?¿ Jolie expresses that the people in these countries work to survive every single day and that it only gets worse. I liked this book because it is real life and it is straightforward. Jolie doesn¿t hold back, she wants to express the truth as hard as it is to hear. There is so much we don't know or understand and through her words we catch a glimpse of the world and what is needed to better it. I wished, sometimes she would elaborate on certain stories but how could she only focus on one story, when there are millions who share similar heart-breaking stories? For anyone looking for that extra push or inspiration to be proactive in our world, this book will do just that. It is awakening and touching is real. Sometimes we take for granted just how much we really have and this book really made me appreciate not only what I have, but appreciate those that are helping and doing all they can.

    Great read, moving

Angelina Jolie has an incredible writing ability. In parts, I longed for more description. But as you have to leave the book wondering why it has left you with an unexplainable feeling, the answer comes. Jolie brings frustration, sadness, happiness, and courage through her extremely real and humane style of writing. You sense her want to learn and help. You feel as if you are beginning to learn with her and are left more curious than before. Most importantly, Jolie leaves her readers wanting to help.

    Eye opening experience!

I may be only 15 but i can already see myself working for a humanitarian cause! Angelina is that one person who has eventually opened my eyes to the hatred and death thats being committed across the world. This book made me laugh, cry, sorrow and smile... But most of all, realise who and what is really important in the world. Her accounts are so heart wrenching i nearly threw up at one point. This is a must read, and should be talked about in every classroom and home...

    cant explain in words

This book is amazing. She says she's not a writer, but she is a trully compassionate human being which I think makes her a brilliant writer. This is one of my alltime favorite books, better than Harry Potter. Because of this books realistic image on whats happening in the world I want to work with the UN when I grow up. I could sit here for hours and talk about this book, so you better just read it and see. I think everyone should read this book, it should be required for school, this way people will see truth and will act, We have the power to change the world...we must act.

    Wide-Eyed and Stupefied

Angelina Jolie presents a remarkable, raw view into the lives of today's refugees in various areas of the world, as well as the people who try to assist them. In the introduction to her journals, she says 'I honestly believe that if we were all aware, we would all be compelled to act...I am not a writer. These are just my journals. They are just a glimpse into a world that I am just beginning to understand, a world I could never really explain in words.' I say that these words demonstrate just how incredible of a human being she truly is, and how sincere and passionate she is about these issues. I say that she is a writer, and that although no-one can entirely depict the images she (and others) saw and experiences she (and others) had into words, I say that she did a bang-up job of it. And I hope that those that are now more aware, feel 'compelled to act'. A must-read for any human being with even the smallest thread of a sense of compassion.
