Overview

Notes from Underground (also translated in English as Notes from the Underground or Letters from the Underworld, though "Notes from Underground" is the most literal translation) is an 1864 short novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. The Notes is considered by many to be the first existentialist novel.

It presents itself as an excerpt from the rambling memoirs of a bitter, isolated, unnamed narrator (generally referred to by critics as the Underground Man) who is a retired civil servant living in St. Petersburg. The first part of the story is told in monologue form, or the underground man's diary, and attacks emerging Western philosophy, especially Nikolay Chernyshevsky's What Is to Be Done?

    GREAT BOOK

I am from Russia and I believe this book is great. Dostoyevsky is one of my favorite authors and I recommend this book to everyone who is interested in Dostoyevsky. Thank you for listening to me, I thankful for such nice behavior from United States.

If you like old civil servants ranting...

...buy this book. This was the first version I was able to understand where this guy was coming from. This is a classic, no doubt about it, but the main character is definitely not warm and cuddly.

    Pure Gold

As always, Dostoyevsky displays in Notes from the Underground an understanding of humanity that is nothing short of the "sublime and beautiful." This was a fantastic read and I recommend it without reserve to lovers of the genre.
