Overview

Long before Bob Carlisle garnered fame for his sugary-sweet ode to fatherhood, Christian music fans knew the "Butterfly Kisses" star as a blue-eyed soul man with an earth-shaking Michael Bolton-esque voice. Carlisle returns to those Motown-soul roots on Nothing But the Truth, which offers a treasure trove of gems boasting surging horns, smooth R&B grooves, and soulful vocals. Among the album's highlights are two stellar remakes: Carlisle's steamy take on Amy Grant's "Baby Baby" will make you forget the bubblegum pop of the original, while his soulful rendition of England Dan and John Ford Coley's "Light Of The World" sheds new light on that golden oldie. The album also showcases Carlisle's crack songwriting on the autobiographical "The Truth" and the moving "Lay Your Hands On Me." Truth effortlessly demonstrates that Bob Carlisle's got both heart and soul.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Charlotte Dillon
Singer and songwriter Bob Carlisle does plenty of gospel music, but listeners will notice lots of different styles stirred into the contemporary Christian tunes he has recorded on this millennium album, Nothing but the Truth. After his big 1997 award-winning hit "Butterfly Kisses," Carlisle found himself in the spotlight as a crossover artist, landing new fans from the country music world. It's a place he seems comfortable in. On this album, he mixes gospel lyrics with rhythm & blues, soul, and just a tiny little touch of pop
ock. There are a number of songs on this offering that have plenty of listening appeal, including "Lay Your Hands on Me," "Love Is the Answer," "River of Peace," and "Watched by an Angel." Most of the tunes on Nothing but the Truth were written or co-written by Carlisle. This is an uplifting album for CCM fans to add to their collections.
