Overview

Alaska State Trooper Liam Campbell, newly promoted to corporal, is slowly making a home for himself in the remote town of Newenham. Between DUIs and domestic disputes, life is relatively tranquil, until Campbell's girlfriend, bush pilot Wyanet Chouinard, delivers a shipment of mail to a remote post office, where she finds the postmistress murdered. The hunt is on for a killer who seems to have vanished into the Bush ... until another victim is found.

The third book in Stabenow's Liam Campbell series, Nothing Gold Can Stay is inspired in part by the true-life story of the Anchorage serial killer, Robert "Baker Bob" Hansen.

Meet the Author

Dana Stabenow was born in Anchorage and raised on 75-foot fish tender in the Gulf of Alaska. She knew there was a warmer, drier job out there somewhere and after having a grand old time working in the Prudhoe Bay oilfields on the North Slope of Alaska, making an obscene amount of money and going to Hawaii a lot, found it in writing.

Her first crime fiction novel, A Cold Day for Murder, won an Edgar award; her first thriller, Blindfold Game, hit the New York Times bestseller list; and her twenty-eighth novel and nineteenth Kate Shugak novel, Restless in the Grave, was published in February 2012. It also features Liam Campbell.

I have read most of Stabenow's Shugak and Campbell novels, this one stacks well , not as good as #2 in the series.

First let me say that Dana could be my new best girlfriend.  We would have many a laugh together with a glass of wine discussing these characters.  However, I  would have a few comments to make during our talk about the main character and why I just can't go much further with him.  Forget the criticism about taking the Lord's name in vain. These critics are missing the point completely .Most of us swear, but most men do not walk out on their "sweet, loving and trusting" wife and 6 month old baby for some broad they met on the job. As the story progresses, it becomes perfectly clear that Jenny and Charlie were just about "under the bus" until Wy put a stop to it.  She is the only character with a shred of decency, and not a whole lot at at that. Dana has tried , I think, to walk it back a little, with Liam's occasional bout of conscience and a tissue dab to his eyes now and then about his dead little boy, but it doesn't work for me. So, to the critics who love Liam and criticize the language, I say get over the swearing and look at lack of morality of the main character in this series. After 4 books, I'm still having a hard time liking him.
