Overview

This tale begins in ancient China in the mid 1800's and revolves around a young Chinese woman, who along with her widowed mother, has to flee from their small village due to increasing internal conflicts and fighting that has broken out in China.

To keep her daughter safe, the mother disguises her as a boy.

The young woman, named Yue and now called Gan, is stunned when she and her mother end up in a brothel in Nanking.

Despite discovering her own lesbian orientation and becoming involved with another woman at the brothel; as the war and personal problems reach a dangerous level, Yue opts to become the valet of an English Lord and leave Nanking, China, perhaps forever.

The latter part of the story focuses on the new woman she meets and the intrigues she encounters upon entering the household of this strange, mysterious Englishman, who may prove to be even more dangerous than the war she was escaping in China.
