Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Aficionados of cliches and stereotypes will derive extraordinary pleasure from practically every page of this formulaic potboiler from the bestselling Sheldon. As the novel opens, Dr. Paige Taylor is on trial for the mercy killing of a patient Did she off the guy for his fortune?; the action then flashes back five years, when Paige and two other female doctors meet as first-year residents at a San Francisco hospital. Paige is the dedicated one, Kate Hunter ``Kat'' an African American whose mother inspired her to lofty ambitions ``You can be anything you want to be. It's up to you'' and Betty Lou Taft ``Honey'', the plain Southern belle whose diligent application of techniques gleaned from the Kama Sutra has assured her a professional niche. The trials and tribulations of both patients and medicos include suspenseful operations, natural deaths, murder and suicide ``All this time he was calling out for help and I didn't hear him.''. Even Sheldon's typically careful research seems forced and out-of-place: tidbits about African tribal lore and medical terms and procedures only interrupt the bathos. Nonetheless--contrary to the book's title--Sheldon's popularity will no doubt remain undiminished. Literary Guild main selection. Sept.

The lives of three young female doctors are the focus of this novel from the ever-productive Sheldon.

Meet the Author

Sidney Sheldon

Novelist and screenwriter Sidney Sheldon remains one of the world's top bestselling authors. His books have sold more than 300 million copies and have been published in dozens of languages—Guinness World Records heralds him as one of the most translated authors in the world. He is also the only writer to have won an Oscar, a Tony, and an Edgar award.

Biography

Best known today for his exciting blockbuster novels, Sidney Sheldon was the author of The Best Laid Plans, Nothing Lasts Forever, The Stars Shine Down, The Doomsday Conspiracy, Memories of Midnight, The Sands of Time, Windmills of the Gods, If Tomorrow Comes, Master of the Game, Rage of Angels, Bloodline, A Stranger in the Mirror, and The Other Side of Midnight. Almost all of them were number-one international bestsellers. His first book, The Naked Face, was acclaimed by the New York Times as "the best first mystery of the year" and received an Edgar Award. Most of his novels became major feature films or TV miniseries, and there are more than 275 million copies of his books in print throughout the world.

Before he became a novelist, Sheldon had already won a Tony Award for Broadway's Redhead and an Academy Award for The Bachelor and the Bobby Soxer. He has written the screenplays for twenty-three motion pictures, including Easter Parade (with Judy Garland) and Annie Get Your Gun. In addition, he penned six other Broadway hits and created three long-running television series, including Hart to Hart and I Dream of Jeannie, which he also produced. A writer who delighted millions with his award-winning plays, movies, novels, and television shows, Sidney Sheldon reigned as one of the most popular storytellers of all time.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Sheldon:

"When I was 17, I was happy to be working in a drugstore, because I could steal enough sleeping pills to commit suicide."

"I have bi-polar syndrome and was not aware what was disturbing me until I received an Academy Award and went to see a psychiatrist."

"I have worked 7 days a week as long as I can remember. A business manager of mine gave me $25 worth of tennis lessons. I went down to my tennis court and we played once a week. I really enjoyed it. Playing with the pro one day, my teacher said to me that the money had been spent and did I want to continue. I started to say yes, then I realized that I didn't want to be out on the tennis court. I wanted to be in my office writing. That was 25 years ago and I haven't been on my tennis court since."

Sidney Sheldon's brilliant tale is a masterpiece!

Each time, you get a chance to read a great novel but very rarely do you get to read such a brilliantly crafted novel as Sidney Sheldon's masterpiece, NOTHING LASTS FOREVER. This is a book you simply can't put down. It features some unforgettable characters, each with a problem in life, each with a goal in mind. All books, even the great ones vanish from our minds when we come to the real world. But NOTHING LASTS FOREVER sticks with you even after the journey. This is the absolute embodiment of perfection and I recommend it to any frequent reader. Outstanding!!!!

    Annother Great Book of Sheldon's!!

This was the 9th book I've read of Sidney Sheldon's. One of his best! The characters were wonderful... the only bad thing is, after reading Sidney Sheldon's novels, I find myself getting too bored with my other books!!!! I read this book in 2 days, and for me (mother of a 4-year old) that's SUPER QUICK... couldn't believe I finished it that fast. I found this book very emotional since the topic is the medical field. I laughed, cried, and was very thrilled with the ending. CHECK THIS ONE OUT.

    So So

My least favorite so far out of the books I have read so far by Mr. Sheldon. It took until almost the end of the book to get going. Not typical of the exciting writing of some of his others where you are gripping the book from page 1 until the end.

    more from this reviewer

The best one out of all of his stories!!

If I had to choose one of his books to call my utmost favorite I would have to say this one.

Again and again he did. He delivered a fast paced keep you on the tip of your toes turning the pages as fast as you can story.

Every single one of the lady doctors in this story captured me and held me in prison locked up in their strengths, heartaches, and abilities.
This story was like no other that he wrote before.

With every page you turned there was so much more going on. The drama, the affairs, the lies, the love.... to no end..

I loved those women doctors especially during a time that women were not allowed to be doctors and they succeeded.

The ending I was not expecting. I was so surprised that the strongest one of them all (the one that I thought was the strongest) ended up dead. And to top it off the way she died! I screamed when I got to that part of the story (Ill save it for you to read) She was the least that I expected and that is what made this story different from his others because sometimes Sheldon can be so predictable.

Nothing really does last forever, good or bad.

Yet another exemplary novel by Sidney Sheldon that truly is captivating & down-to-earth intriguing.

Sidney Sheldon has yet again proved his caliber in writing a gripping thriller that is centered around the act of euthanasia. Its acceptance level amongst the public & which drives a doctor to charges of murdering her own patient. The story is a perfect blend of romance, suspicion, friendship, and above all the intriguing challenges that doctors/medical residents have to face in their everyday hospital routine. Certainly, this novel never lets you to drift away in thoughts and efficaciously grabs the attention of all readers till the very end.

    disappointing

The ending was predictable. The characters weren't very deep or likeable--they were cliche and one sided. The writing was so simple that I was taken aback. I expected more from someone like Sidney Sheldon.
