Barnes & Noble - Rebecca Wallwork
You might expect the NOTTING HILL movie-soundtrack combo to be just another romantic comedy package, with dazzling hooks and shimmering melodies made to match Julia Roberts's 100-watt smile. But this collection of songs goes one better. Of course, wherever there's a "troubled" love story, there's bound to be sappy ballads -- like Boyzone's "No Matter What" and Boyzone boy Ronan Keating's solo outing, "When You Say Nothing at All" -- but there's also a little soul, courtesy of Al Green, Bill Withers, and the Lighthouse Family, who deliver their own funky spin on Withers's "Ain't No Sunshine." The setting of the film, a quaint London neighborhood, renders the country influence on the soundtrack a bit surprising, but nonetheless, Shania Twain lays down her polished twang, Steve Poltz emotes like a countrified Duncan Sheik, and R&B boyz 98 Degrees transform Mark Willis's hit "I Do Cherish You" into a sleek love song. Overall, this album may not be A-list, but taken one at a time, most of these songs pass the test.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The soundtrack to the Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant romantic comedy Notting Hill is every bit as consciously classy as the film it supports. If it isn't as ingratiating, that's because it's significantly harder to offer a twist on a formula soundtrack album than on a formula movie. With a film, little details, supporting characters, and subtle, interesting visuals give the movie identity within a formula. Unfortunately, a soundtrack remains a collection of oldies, newer songs, and score excerpts, no matter how much you shake it up, and that's the case here. Much of this is quite enjoyable -- it's hard to go wrong with such pop classics as Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine," Al Green's "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart," and Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" providing the foundation. If the newer songs aren't quite up to par -- Elvis Costello's "She" is nearly as appealingly lush as his Bacharach collaboration, but his quavering vibrato undercuts it somewhat, and sadly, Boyzone's "No Matter What" is not a Badfinger cover -- they're all still pretty good, especially 98 Degrees' "I Do Cherish You" and Shania Twain's "You've Got a Way," which is presented in a nice remix. If the score excerpts don't add much, it's OK, because that's usually the case with these kinds of soundtracks. What counts is the mix of oldies and new songs, and this time around, it's pretty enjoyable, even if it doesn't have the charming character of the film itself.

    Highly Recommend!

I bought this cd after watching the movie (also very good) and have not stopped playing it! I love the songs in which I am familiar, and are now hooked on the others too. I'm buying this cd for a few people for Christmas. You can't go wrong!

    Fabulous Music!!!

After watching the movie, I was captivated by the range of musical areas this soundtrack covered. On any given day, this CD can lift me up no matter what mood I am in. I listen to it while at home or in the car, Bill Withers makes you feel like he is singing to you.

Something that you fall in love with...

I caught this movie on the cable. So I would watch it everytime it came on...especially the part in the garden...with 'when you say nothing at all'. Best romantic comedy since 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'. Please try to watch it.
