This book tells you how and why to eat healthfully. After surgery, I took up eating in this manner and my husband and I are strong and healthy, hardly ever sick in the 3 years we have been eating this way...and I have lost 22 lbs. just by paying attention and cutting out sugar and white carbs..JUNK!

Finally, A Diet/Nutrition Plan That Makes Sense!

Like most people I have relied on the powers that be to assure me that I have the latest information in regard to nutrition and the quality of the food I eat. None of it fully made sense, because people are still getting sick and there is no end in sight. This book explains why and gives plenty of scientific references to back up their claims some will simply amaze you. One of the examples tells about a science experiment using three groups of mice. Each group either received rat food, corn flakes cereal, or the box. The rats who were fed the box actually lived longer than the rats who ate the corn flakes cereal. So, if you want to live a longer healthier life this is the cookbook for you. You will learn the basics of food preparation, which people used for hundreds of years, before all of our modern technology. The recipes are clear and concise, but will require some planning. However with recipes that were founded all over the world, I think there is something for everyone from the gourmet to the hurried parents. Stop eating the box and but this book.

THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nourishing Traditions is a smart, intellegent book that goes against the main stream Diet Dictocrats out there. This book is a must have for everyone who truly cares about their health. Its a well balanced veiw on nutrion and the foods that has nourished our anscestors so many years ago. there is not another diet book on the market like this. I am 24 years old and this is my health bible. the recipes in the book are to die for. they are so good! Everyone needs this book!!!!!!

The best health cookbook I ever read.

For anyone that has read a number of health/cooking books, 'Nourishing Traditions' jumps out as the one that makes complete sense. It is strongly founded in traditions that have evolved in societies over thousands of years, but the arguments are well-supported by modern scientific principles, and free of any religious basis. Like Jared Diamond's 'Guns, Germs, and Steel', Fallon's book wakes you up to the fact that modern diet and modern food preparation is so vastly different from what societies around the globe have 'optimized'--resulting in astoundingly similar techniques that have disappeared in merely a century. There are surprises, such as how whole grains should be properly soaked, or how raw animal products (e.g., butter) are strongly recommended. Great recipes too, but the real value of this book is the set of fundamentals in nutrition and food preparation. I have no idea why this book is not on the best-seller list.

A fabulous kitchen resource

Probably the most useful cookbook out there. This lavishly researched text advocates real food, prepared traditionally--something long missing in the American culture of processed instant 'nourishment.' For some readers, the concept of cooking real food may be discouraging; however, most of the recipes are not all that time-consuming. Even the ones with lengthier preparation (such as traditional bone broth for soups) can be easily worked into a hectic schedule with a little forethought. [I know--I work full-time and am in graduate school full-time, and still cook everything from scratch.] In addition to the incredible recipes and the long-awaited emphasis on real, nutrient-dense food, this cookbook is an absolute treasure trove of information on the science behind nutrition, on the characteristics of healthy traditional diets, and the problems with modern processed foods. This is a must-read for anyone with any chronic health problem, or anyone sick and tired of the perpetually-changing dietary updates in the mass media.

Also an Invaluable Text !

This is not just a cookbook! Equally or even more important is the first section of the book which contains invaluable chapters on fats (importance of butter and coconut oil as well as polyunsaturates), grains (their proper preparation!!!), proteins (raw meats and fish as well), vitamins, minerals (excellent documentation on how we absorb minerals and explains mineral salts, chelates, colloids etc.), special diets, etc. This is well researched and quotes and explains the faults in studies used by the 'establishment' and diet dictocrats to 'justify' their positions. Throughout the cookbook section the margins are filled with invaluable quotes from varying sources. Just excellent! After 20 years of researching and reading on nutrition, I finally found a book that puts it all in perspective. You need this book!

A proven method of healing nutrition. A must-have for every household.

In regards to the reviewer who mentioned heart disease as a reason for not purchasing this book, please understand that the steep rise in incidence of heart disease began when our society was introduced to the "miracle" of margarine. The connection is undeniable.

There is no arguing with the thousands of people who have turned their lives around using traditional methods of eating, completely eliminating from their lives the various ailments that our society is riddled with, thanks to the artificial junk being fed to us by those who stand to profit from their sales.

Besides...if my choice for a cure is between trying food many have thought for years to be somewhat unhealthy regardless of the centuries of proof of the contrary, and a chemical soup of a quick fix that is KNOWN to cause health issues, I'll opt for the food. =)

The Whole Idea of Food

If you like good home cooking and are intrigued by the taboos of today's fast food diets, this is the cookbook for you. The author, Sally Fallon, does an exceptional job of enticing you into her book with documented factoids on the sidelines of every page tossed among good looking recipes. This book is truly an adventure in cooking and is all about learning the truth of the matter when it comes to ingredients. An expert researcher, she answers questions about eating what really matters like real butter, chocolate and brown rice. This cookbook is very exhilarating and enlightening, offering insight as well as warnings on every page. Because she has so well documented her comments, you almost feel like you've been in a history class or on a world tour, gathering refreshment and wisdom as you go. Divided into easy to use sections, you are continually challenged to know what matters most, the real story. One of my favorite sideline tidbits describes how they make hydrogenated vegetable oils and exactly why they aren't food any more. You'll be amazed at what you learn about digestion and can check your progress throughout the book in the form of small quizzes with answers in the back. It's not "out of reach" cooking and it appeals to your senses. It will cause you to reconsider your food choices and I believe for the better.

not a normal cookbook

This book is not for beginners. It`s full of information about all the things people in Amerika think are bad for you. Like using butter and drinking full fat milk. A lot of facts why you shoud avoid fortified and fat reduced food.
The recepies are very interesting to try.
I didn`t like that a lot of statments are repetative. It get`s old after a while.
But for me it`s a great book, even when it transformed my family into guiney pigs -somebody has to try the food!

One of the Best book on real Nutrition

I have recommended Nourishng Traditions to all my clients. It is a refreshing back to basic, good, Chemical free, steeped in truth nutritional book with great recipes and valuable information.

The one disappointing review this book received should be challenged. I have followed the principles of NT for over 10 years. Regarding the comment on heart disease it should be noted that those telling us how to prevent it, ie. heart disease, are some of the same who say eating sugar coated cereals and highly processed foods are okay...so 'who do you trust' - I trust Nourishing Traditions, and highly recommend this book to anyone interested in maintaining or regaining their health.

Want to be challenged?

This book has turned my world upside down. The jury is still out on if I'm going to fully adapt and accept all that was presented in this book, but it definitely has me thinking. I fully embrace the 'old school' way of preparing foods and do my best at staying away from refined and processed foods. However, this book tells you that what you thought was good and healthy isn't. What to do?

Filled with wonderful information!

A must have in every wise home

Nourishing Traditions invites us to partake in the full feast of Human Traditions. At the root of our civilization is the wisdom and support for health and vitality. Come home to inspirational recipes and be nourished by wise insights that are thoughtfully explained and supported.

Impressive, comprehensive, shocking and depressing

There's not much left in this world unspoiled, including the food you eat. This book is expertly written and well researched like a PhD thesis. By the time you finish reading the introductory chapters, you will question everything you thought you knew about what foods really are healthy for you.

Excellent book

This book is great for the beginner or the advanced of TRUE healthy eating. Lots of information throught the entire book. Tips and suggestions on saving money and eating healthy the right way. I highly recommend it.

Horrid recipes

I went to the trouble of making three recipes today. Absolutley horrid.
Simple Chicken Breats and decided on the variation version Mexican Chicken Breats with lime, oregana and chili flakes. Merinated for 6 hours and they were so bland I am contemplating what to do with them. What a waste of money and time. The chicken is so undersalted it's a crime. I understand this is a so called politically correct cook book but this is bad.... Also did the Mexican Rice oh so needs some sort of flavor added. I cooked the rice for 2 hours as stated and still very chewy and tough, absolutley no flavor. Just plain nasty. Also made the Chismole I added jalepenos after tasting and still so bland I will fix later. Although there are some good tips in the book you can get those off of the internet for free, don't waste your time with this book the recipes are absolutley nasty, bland and a waste of time. I give this a ZERO star but Barnes and Nobel rating system won't let me change this. YUCK, YUCK, YUCK.

It's time to question what you have heard about a healthy diet.

This book gets back to the basics. A healthy diet reflective of what mother earth has to offer us. The authors share well researched information about the diets of traditional peoples as well as excerpts from other authors pertaining to health and wellness. The book contains delicious recipes as well as the background/reasoning for following this nutritional path.

With heart disease a number one killer we should take another look at traditional diet. Just because it was done in the past doesn't mean it is a good thing to continue. Especally in the light of new information. Good, tasteful recipies, but bad nutritional advice.
