Germany's Audipharm label puts together its second volume of Nova Soul, another two-disc set that compiles house tracks with heavy touches of soul and jazz. As with most of the output that falls into this realm, there's a fine line between the stimulating and the nauseating. Some tracks are so self-conscious in their attempts at being smooth and sophisticated that they might as well evaporate. Others, however, update the spirit of '70s and early-'80s soul while melding it into their take on contemporary deep house. Nothing breaks ground, and everything's pretty safe, but the results are occasionally enjoyable. This set includes Uschi Classen's "Soul Magic," Nathan Haines' "Squire for Hire," and Attica Blues' remix of Shaun Escoffery's "Conversations of the Heart."
