Overview

November in Battle Lake, Minnesota, is cold enough to freeze the balls off a pool table. lt's also deer hunting season. When Tom Kicker is killed in a hunting accident, Mira James is hired to investigate—a job that brings her closer to a P.I. license. Braving subzero temps and shrieking blizzards, Mira uncovers a decades-old scandal that has never quite died, unlike the cold stiffs who are piling up in the town morgue. As she pieces together the clues, Mira discovers that Battle Lake's good-old boys have been up to some bad business. But with threats and enemies around every icy corner, she may not live long enough to expose the truth.

Praise:
"It's not easy to make people laugh while they're on the edge of their seats, but Lourey pulls it off, while her vivid descriptions of a brutal Minnesota winter will make readers shiver in the seventh book in her very clever Murder-of-the-Month series."—Booklist, (starred review)

"Lourey has a knack for wholesome sexual innuendo, and she gets plenty of mileage out of Minnesota. This light novel keeps the reader engaged, like one of those sweet chewy Nut Goodies that Mira is addicted to."Hallie Ephron, The Boston Globe

"Lourey’s seventh cozy featuring PI wannabe Mira James successfully combines humor, an intriguing mystery, and quirky smalltown characters."—Publishers Weekly

The eleventh novel in her Murder By The Month series brings sometime librarian-cum-private investigator Mira James squarely up against some respected town leaders. Mira is angling to become a licensed P.I. and needs many hours of supervised investigation in order to qualify. Given that her account in the local Battle Lake bank is flatter than the pancakes served at the local eatery, she has two powerful motives to take on the investigation of a local philanthropist and business man’s murder by his long time buddy. November in Minnesota can be cold. Not only does the weather provide impediments, so do many of the town’s citizens, but Mira perseveres against bone-cracking cold and icy stares. The author is a good writer and the story is enhanced with clever characters, and a lot of tongue-in-cheek dialogue. The series is known for the self-deprecating insouciance of the main character and her slightly twisted outlook on life. The danger of this kind of approach is in going over the cliff. Sometimes the impact of a really powerfully crafted scene can be lessened by the odd verbal swipe. The plot is well designed and while there are few large surprises, the author spins this tale tightly and nicely to its conclusion with the aid of several interesting and amusing characters. This edition contains a series of discussion questions which can be useful to book clubs. In the spirit of full disclosure, I note that the author and I are long-time acquaintances.

I picked this book up on a whim.....just to see if I would be interested in this series. I was pleasantly surprised how easy the story was and how well it flowed. Good story, good characters, a dark issue, but it was all put together well. I will definitely look for more in this series! I recommend it.

A Terrific Read I love this series. Mira is studying to be a PI when she gets her first case with Mrs Berns prodding. It seems that her client’s father was accidentally shot by his best friend, or was it an accident. Mira learns of a past indiscretion that may be connected and she’ll have to dig out the truth before someone else gets hurt. What a great read. This character-driven tale boasts an eccentric cast of characters that I enjoy immensely, great dialogue, and a mystery that moves the story along to an explosive finish. This is one of the best books in this wonderful series and I look forward to more of Mira's journey with her friends in Battle Lake.
