Now Hear This! [Big Beat]

All Music Guide
Norman Petty is best known for serving as producer and studio hand for Buddy Holly and Bobby Fuller, but hundreds of other acts made their way to Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico during the '50s and '60s, and this compilation brings together 25 tracks he produced as the British Invasion was changing the shape of American rock & roll. There's plenty of Beatles-influenced melodies and fuzztone snarl to be found in these sides, but Petty brings a sense of professionalism to the recordings that gives them just the right touch of polish, no matter how whacked out the proceedings get (and with songs like "Hate" by the Perils, "Say I Am (What I Am)" by Stu Mitchell and Doug Roberts, and "Danger Zone" by Barry Allen ...

There's plenty of Beatles-influenced melodies and fuzztone snarl to be found in these sides, but Petty brings a sense of professionalism to the recordings that gives them just the right touch of polish, no matter how whacked out the proceedings get (and with songs like "Hate" by the Perils, "Say I Am (What I Am)" by Stu Mitchell and Doug Roberts, and "Danger Zone" by Barry Allen with Wes Dakus & the Rebels on the set list, things can get more than a little strange). The set kicks off with a rare side from the Crickets, "Now Hear This," that finds Holly's old partners adapting to the times very well indeed, and those looking for solid pop tunes will enjoy "Hey Little Schoolgirl" from the Famous Last Words and "Ma'am" by the Cinders. Fans of blues-wailing swagger should cue up Monacle's "Let Your Lovin' Grow"; the Cords' "Sin Crazed Woman" is almost as good as its title; and if you can't get enough Farfisa organ, "Sweet Sweet Sadie" from the Teardrops is right up your alley. Big Beat has done a fine job with this material, including solid remastering and fun, informative liner notes, and if you're still looking for potent garage action from the '60s, Now Hear This! Garage & Beat from the Norman Petty Vaults
