Publishers Weekly
Three series aimed at beginning readers will gear children up for fall. The Now I'm Reading! series offers two titles by Nora Gaydos, illus. by B.B. Sams, focusing on phonics, each in a brightly colored corrugated binder with a magnetic closure. Animal Antics covers short-vowel sounds for "level one" readers; Amazing Animals highlights long-vowel sounds for "level two" readers. A Parent Guide bound into the left side of the binder offers tips and includes 40 stickers for rewarding successful readers; on the right, 10 numbered 12-page stories fit into transparent sleeves. Each story concludes with a set of questions for "After You Read" plus the skills taught in the tale. (July) Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

    Just wonderful!

I have nothing but great things to say about this series. Our four year old is so thrilled that she can read these. As a teacher, I am thrilled that they follow such an appropriate sequence of learning. I can find nothing to critique about these.

    I Also Recommend:

    Perfect! My kids LOVE them!

These are short stories, not too long for little ones. The stories are quirky and the characters are funny. There are a few comprehension questions in the back cover, such an important part of reading that gets over looked in other "leveled" reading series, as well as a few rhyming words and creativity questions. Just 2 or 3 of each so little kids don't get overwhelmed. Perfect!

Highly Recommended for Early Readers (Kindergarten)

We started the series with Level 1 to supplement the reading materials that were coming home from school. These books are amazing! Our son's reading level has improved and he is always excited to read one of these books every night. The added motivation of the stickers (which you place on the inside cover of each book you complete) is a great idea. We are now reading the Level 2 series and the "reading momentum" has not stopped!

    Now he's reading!

My 5 yr old little boy loves this set, as much as I do. He enjoys the books so much- the characters and stories are funny and colorful- he actually WANTS to read the books. The BOB books are a great tool too- but he didn't like them for learning- too boring. Now that he's almost finished with "Animal Antics" he's excited that he can breeze through the first few Bob books and can read all kinds of words everywhere!
We have the next set (the Advanced Level 1) ready to go.

    Wonderful books for new readers!

So many books say that they are for pre-K or Kindergarteners, but when opened, they often have complicated words. This series is just perfect for my kinder. He loves the little stories and can actually sound them out himself. Each book focuses on one short vowel sound so that he can practice that over and over. He's so proud of himself and will hardly put the books down. His teacher even wants to buy some for the class. I plan to buy more from this series right away.

    A must have!

My son is 5 and in Pre-K and is learning the short vowel words in school. These stories are very amusing and we both enjoy them. The look of excitement is priceless after reading each word.

    You'll love Animal Antics!

These have been the best beginner books for my kids. My kids love to read them and are so excited to get a sticker for completing them. Both my kids were 4 years old when starting level 1. No other phonics books have been this well written.

    Very satisfied!

My children absolutely love these books and can read them easily. They generally go through the entire set in one sitting and I've noticed a significant difference in their self confidence since they've had them. The author is definitely on my list of favorites!

    Now she's reading!

My 5 year old girl showed an interest in starting to sound things out. She can memorize a story the 2nd time she hears it. These books made her actually start sounding out words on her own. The pride she felt at earning her 1st sticker from 'fat cat' brought tears to my eyes. The ah-ha moment was when all the abc's and letter sounds that she's been learning for so long came together easily and in a fun book! The questions at the end are a wonderful way to make sure that there is comprehension happening. YEAH Nora, Gaydos! It's been 3 weeks and we are half done with Level 2. SHe can't get enough!

    The best there is!!

My daughter loves them & I love how she has learned to read.At only 5 years old, these books have given her the foundation that no others have. We also have tried(Bob) and I continue to recommended these, even to her teacher and other parents. Give them a try you won't be disappointed. The stickers are an excellent reward system. Learn to read with laughter

We loved these books. After trying different books (including Bob that he did not like) - he fights me to read more and more of this series. Their light humor keeps us giggling.

My 5 Year Old Son Loved These Books!

My son has just finished the final book, #10 of Now I'm Reading! - Animal Antics. He absolutely loved working his way through each book and was highly motivated by earning a sticker each time he read one "by himself"! Getting a boy to sit still for more than 5 minutes is a challenge. However, with these books, he repeatly asked me if he could sit down and read the next book so he could earn another sticker. I feel confident he will be ready to go when he starts Kindergarten in the Fall. I'm ordering level 2 now.

    Better than Bob.

My daughter just finished Animal Antics. These books were a hugh success. The color pictures and cute stories were much more enticing than the Bob books. It was nice to have the books all in one book and the stickers were a nice reward when you finish reading a story.

    Great books for beginner readers

My son is 5 and just beginning to read. This set of books contains two books for each short vowel sound, one relatively easy book (ex. "Fat Cat") and one slightly more difficult book (ex. "Crqb Trap"). All the words in the story (except for a few basic sight words, ex. the, is, to, by, etc.) are spelled phonetically and each story contains a limited number of words that are repeated throughout the story. My son not only feels tremondous pride in reading these books to us, but also really enjoys the stories - they're really quiet good (dramatic and funny) with great colorful illustrations. He also loves the stickers - each story has 4 corresponding stickers, so by the time he has read the book four times he can read it quite fluently.

    GREAT FOR BEGINNING READERS!

This book is great for beginners, it helps encourage reading by including stickers for each time they complete one of ten stories. This book helps boost new readers confidence - it's a must for those struggling. We are planning on continuing with this series of books.
