Overview

In the most eagerly awaited political memoir of the season, Mary Cheney, who served as a top campaign aide to her father, the vice president, presents a behind-the-scenes look at the high-intensity world of presidential politics and talks for the first time about her life, her family, and her role in the campaigns of 2000 and 2004.

As a senior adviser to her father, she was in the middle of every major event of the 2000 and 2004 presidential contests -- at the conventions, the debates, and on the trail. Both elections made history -- and so did Mary. And for the first time ever, she writes about what it was like to be at the center of her father's campaigns as his daughter, as a member of the senior staff, and, though she never intended it, as a political target for the other side.

Mary, her experiences, and her opinions, have been the subject of intense debate in the media and from activists on both ends of the political spectrum, but she has never spoken publicly about herself, her life, or her political views -- until now.

In Now It's My Turn, a frank, funny, and down-to-earth memoir, Mary Cheney describes life inside the bubble of a national campaign. She talks about her close relationship with her parents, how it feels to be pursued by the press, and what it was like when John Edwards and John Kerry made her sexual orientation an issue in live debates televised to millions of Americans. As she describes it, life inside a presidential campaign can be uplifting, frustrating, and heartbreaking, but no matter what else it may be, it's always entertaining.

Realistic View of Politics and Parenting

I feel 'Now It's My Turn' has much to offer everyone. It is a realistic look at the media, politics, parenting and many other things we have to deal with every day of our lives. It gives us a perspective of what truly goes on behind the scenes in political campaigns and the amount of energy that is used. I loved the book and wish that others involved with politics could write similar books.

A Fascinating Chronicle of a Political Family

I can't say I'm surprised by the negative rants posted by those whose myopia precludes them from seeing past one or two issues. I think Mary Cheney should be applauded for being honest about disagreeing with a policy and not allowing a difference of opinion to force her to withdrawal support from a candidate. Politics is not about fixating on a single issue and spewing vitriol at anyone who dares to disagree with your position. Politics is about principle and compromise¿I think there are a number of people in public office who would do well to remember that. Thank you Mary Cheney for a fascinating chronicle of two presidential campaigns from a truly unique perspective and for a touching portrait of a loving, supportive family.

Witty Account of the Two Cheney VP Campaigns

Indeed it is Mary Cheney's turn. After the Dems tried to use her sexual orientation as an issue, Mary Cheney tells her side. This is not a gay book. It is an intelligent, funny insider's look at running a national campaign. Full of hilarious missteps, adventures with the press, uncompromising loyality to family, here is a good read.

    don't give her a turn

What has now become clear, is that Mary Cheney typifies the depth to which the Republicans were able to close ranks during the 2004 campaign. And it also makes clear how many voices were lost. Besides misnaming the book, as if her father has chronicled his own life in some previous book, her turn sounds as if it should be a co- commentary, or rebuttle. It isn't. She discussed rights that have been shoved into the closet--that as a member of a wealthy, powerful family-- she'll never have to suffer under. Shameful. As a gay man, I was curious about what a real insider, an out homosexual, would say. Ranks are tight: to family, and party alike. Nothing surprising here. And, it's clear that I'm not at all bitter.
