Barnes & Noble - Tracy E. Hopkins
Neo-soul fans who flocked to his Urban Hang Suite in 1996 but decided to party elsewhere when the host unveiled his ponderous Embrya will be happy to know that Maxwell's house is once again the place to be. Three years in the making, the lyrically thoughtful and imaginatively arranged Now returns to the singer's retro-soul roots while it ups the ante on its predecessors. On swoon-worthy slow jams such as the languid "W/as My Girl," where Maxwell's yearning vocals float atop a sonic union of DJ scratches and twangy country guitar licks, the stirring "Symptom Unknown," and the Prince-ly, wedding anthem-to-be "Lifetime," Maxwell flexes his newly unrestrained vocals and...

On swoon-worthy slow jams such as the languid "W/as My Girl," where Maxwell's yearning vocals float atop a sonic union of DJ scratches and twangy country guitar licks, the stirring "Symptom Unknown," and the Prince-ly, wedding anthem-to-be "Lifetime," Maxwell flexes his newly unrestrained vocals and stakes his claim as neo-soul's leading lover man. Raising the temperatures of his female listeners yet another notch on "For Lovers Only," Maxwell purrs in a hot-flash-inducing falsetto, "Love is not a want/ Love is now a need/ Not just cause I got nobody." Although this heir to Marvin Gaye's boudoir-soul throne is a ladies' man first and foremost, Maxwell also knows how to get the fellas caught up in his rapture with hipster party jams such as the understated, jazzy groove "Get to Know Ya," the rock-guitar-accented "Temporary Nite," and the Isley Brothers-esque funk of "Changed," a song about a lover whose interest is piqued after he "changed his mind." As a bonus, a studio version of Maxwell's breathtaking rendition of Kate Bush's "This Woman's Work" which originally appeared on 1997's Maxwell Unplugged is thrown into the disc's cool, romantic mix. With its delicious blend of heart-tugging classic R&B and '70s-inspired funk, Maxwell's Now is good to the last drop.

    Thank You for Now!!!

NOW, is definetly the appropriate title. NOW he has proven to all his critics why he is a musician to be reckoned with. Sensuality, Femininty, Masculinity, Freedom, Hurt, Pain, Triumph, and sexuality are all in one on NOW. He is simply indescribable. Quickly apporaching perfection. It is very rare but, Maxwell has gotten better with each album. If you don't have this, NOW is the time to get it!

    Maxwell??ALL DAY EVERYDAY!!!!!

Maxwell's new album ''Now'', is exceptional. Ofcourse I didnt expect anything less, only the best unique lyrics, that appeal to the ear. This artist is at the top of my list of favorites. He's real, respectful, soulful and not to mention his voice which is clear, and beautiful!!! I recently went to a concert of his, he blew my mind just like the last concert I attended in 1997. He's a true performer. He deserves 10 stars, instead of five for his style, presentation, and creativity. The fact that he doesnt get media or television publicity, just makes Maxwell fans want to see him more, and proves that he is real talent, because he doesnt have to get fans by being too showy, or being like others. Maxwell is real!!!!!!!!! (cant wait till the next concert, hopefully I'll be in the front row)

    Soulful and Sexy

Maxwell's CD is the hottest CD right now. His sleek, soulful, and sexy voice send chills down my spine. This is a CD you can put on, mellow out, and let the whole CD play without skipping a song. Maxwell is one of the best soul singers out there, no doubt.

How he sounds on CD is the same as you hear him live

Maxwell's new album NOW is a combination of his previous albums Urban Hang Suite and Embrya and the only difference is...he gets better with each album. He takes love, romance and erotica into a deeper, sensual meaning. I went to his concert lastnight and enjoyed every minute. His voice live is as flawless as he sounds on CD. For all you Maxwell fans, this album is a definite must have on your shopping lists.

    Smooth R&B Lover

This new CD is absolutely the best. It embodies his smooth look and sound. I was and still is memorized by his vocal talent. He is the Luther Vandross of my era.

    Maxwell is ''DA MAN''

I am so in love with this man....the emotion in his music just takes me to another place...honestly. To compare this album with Urban Hang Suite and Embrya would be an injustice to Maxwell's talent, they are all based on different stages of Maxwell's life and emotions. NOW is a reflection of a more mature Maxwell, who's still looking for love, but has come to accept that it isn't always a bed of roses. NOW is simply Maxwell at his best...what else can I say.

He's Back! The ''Slow Groove'' CD for 2001!

Maxwell has taken us to yet another level--again! This is the best of his albums in my opinion. You can hear the maturity and the comfort level he has achieved over the last several years. ''For Lovers Only''--His songs are stronger and the bass grooves are hypnotic! Love it!

    Maxwell has done it again!!

The much awaited third release from Maxwell is just as good as the first if not better. As usual Maxwell manages to keep the same classicl soul sound while adding a little flair. His growth as an artist shines greatly in this album. He sings of subjects we all can relate to . This album is a must for Maxwell fans and fans of soul.

    Worth the Wait...

There were two releases that I anxiously awaited this year...Sade/ Lovers Rock and this hook laiden groove fest. There are a few artists, let me stress few, out there that have the integrity to make their fans wait a little longer for new music in the hopes that they will actually provide ''new music''. Most popular artists spastically distribute one new release after another. Not this crooner, his tracks are aged to perfection. Maxwell consistently sets a standard on one release by which the next one will be measured and you can bet that a collection of songs by him will not see the light of day before they are flawless. He did it with Urban Hang Suite, Embrya and he has done it once again with Now. I won't even attempt to draw any comparisons between the albums, we all know that they are each modern classics. I will say that this is Maxwell's most mature release to date. Stripped down, soulful and poiniently written... Now is a masterpiece! I will be wearing grooves in this one. Thanks Maxwell for exceeding my expectations. J

    Get Maxwell Now!!

If you are tired of the trashy, empty, pointless lyrics of today's mainstream R&B then Maxwell's NOW is for you. His lyric and vocal ability have reached an all time high and should set the standard for great R&B music. This album is awesome. Try to catch him live if you can!!

    Abstract, Deep, Beautiful, Soulful

As each song pursues the next you find yourself drawn into a soothing embrace, a deep comfort. Your mind opens and you feel things, so many things and you want more... Even the strongest will bend to his voice, to his words until you break down and surrender to your emotions. You cannot stop it, and you really don't want to. Then, the music ends and you start over.
