Overview

One of the more diverse and stylistically balanced Now compilations of the last few years, the 28th volume, released roughly three months after the 27th, features major and marginal hits that technically date back as far as 2005 (Flyleaf's "All Around Me," which obviously took some time to take off) and in some cases reflect the upper reaches of the Billboard Hot 100 the day the disc was released: Lil Wayne's "Lollipop," Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love," Natasha Bedingfield's "Pocketful of Sunshine," and Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown's "No Air" were still riding high, while Metro Station's horrid new wave retreat "Shake It" and Colbie Caillat's wispy "Realize" were still in the ascent. And while it went to the top of the dance chart, Britney Spears' "Break the Ice" is the token oddball pick, given that it didn't break the Top 60 of the Hot 100.

I am a DJ at a bar where variety is key unlike a club per se where you deal in mainly one genera. That being said I think this is one of their best mixes of any Now that I have bought. The only reason why I wouldn't give it 5 stars is because I'd like to see some unedited versions but I know these are mainly marketed at juveniles.

I haven't bought this CD, but I do know most of the songs on here. I'll give a song by song review. 1. Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis I'm a big fan of her, and I really do love this song, though it is a bit overplayed on the radio. If you like her, check out her CD, my faves from there are Bleeding Love, Angel, Footprints in the Sand, Yesterday, Take a Bow[so much better than Rihanna's version], and I will be. 2. Break the Ice - Britney Spears I'm not a big fan of Britney, but this is a pretty good song. 3. Killa - Yung Joc Well...I'm not a big fan of rap at all. And the sample they give for this isn't a very good one. I'll have to say that this isn't a very good song, in my opinion. Though Killah by Cherish is a lot better, I do really like that one, very catchy and easy to dance to. 4. Lollipop - Static Major Don't they mean by Lil Wayne? Anyway, this one is pretty good. But like I said, I don't like rap and hip-hop that much. 5. Sexy Can I - Yung Berg Uh...Ray J, isn't it? Well, this one is pretty nice. The chorus is very catchy, though it's rap, sooo...I don't like rap parts of the songs. At dances, it's obvious that everyone's not dancing anymore when the verses come up, because rap is very hard to dance to. 6.With You - Chris Brown I like it, catchy and a good song. It's probably my favorite by Chris Brown, though I'm not a big fan. 7. Te Quiero - Belinda I don't think I've ever heard this song before, and even after listening to the sample, I don't think I know what the song is. Well, it seems pretty catchy, but I can't say anything without hearing the whole song. 8. Pocketful of Sunshine - Natasha Bedingfield I like this one, pretty catchy and memorable. It does show off Natasha's good voice range. Good lyrics as well. 9. No Air - Jordin Sparks I like it, and Jordin Sparks has a very good voice. But it's too repetitive. They say 'No Air' way too much, especially at the end. Though the two parts are put together very well. 10. Realize - Colbie Cailat I don't like Colbie Cailat that much, so this song is only...okay. 11. Stop and Stare - OneRepublic I really like this one, it's very nice. It's very memorable and catchy. 12. Say - John Mayer This song is a bit too repetitive, though I like the song, but it's not one of my favorites. 13. All Around Me - Flyleaf It's an interesting song, and I guess it's okay. The music video is very...strange, and the lead singer looks like she's drunk or high. But it's an okay song. 14. Shake It - Metro Station I've probably heard this song before, but it's not that familiar. From the sample, it sounds pretty good. 15. Beat It - Fall Out Boy I like Fall Out Boy, and I've heard this song a few times before. The sample isn't a very good clip of the song, I like the song, it's very nice. 16. Whatever It Takes - Lifehouse This is a pretty nice song, though I've only heard it a few times before. 17. Feels Like Tonight - Daughtry I'm a big fan of Daughtry, and I really think he should've won American Idol, and it's obvious that he's much more famous than the winner from Season 5, or even the runnerup. This is one of his very good songs, and I really like it. Some others of his very good songs are Over You, It's Not Over, and Home. 18. In Love With a Girl - Gavin DeGraw It's...an okay song. I don't really like him. 19. You're Gonna Miss This - Trace Adkins I think I've heard this song before, and it's an okay song. 20. Our Song - Taylor Swift I'm also a big fan of Taylor Swift, and I like this song a lot, though it's not my favorite of her.I love all of her songs, and all of them are pretty memorable and have very good lyrics. Overall, there are some very good songs on here, but this Now CD doesn't have the best song selections on here. Some of the songs on here should be replaced with other more well-known or catchy/memorable songs.

I heard the Now 28 CD listening to parts of it for 2 days on the week of its release. Today &amp quot several weeks later&amp quot , I listened to all 20 songs nonstop for 72 minutes with no interruptions. This has to be one of their best compilations since Now 5, Now 10 or Now 15! There is such a consistent flow and sequence. Leona Lewis weaving into Britney Spears Break the Ice is rare. From how the two Chris Brown songs are balanced into the mix. And a rarity with two Howard Benson-produced songs for Daughtry and Gavin Degraw back to back! And I'm pleased that Jordin Sparks is on a second consecutive Now compilation with her Chris Brown duet! There are some suprises such as Flyleaf's All Around Me and Lifehouse's superb Whatever It Takes. And Colbie Caillet's Realize. Fall Out Boy's surprisingly good remake of Michael Jackson's Beat It! Metro Station's Shake It is fun, very '80s sounding. Lil' Wayne's Lollipop is a little explicit, but it's a smartly done hip-hop song, very smooth landscapes. And I didn't like Ray J/Young Berg's song Sexy Can I at first, but I like it now after several listens. For the first time, the Now handlers made a collection that's not disjointed or uneven. There's a consistent pace back to back. And while there are a few that are from 2005 or 2006, they balance quite well to the 2008 and 2007 songs that dominate this collection. A good sampler of what pop music sounds like in 2008. These are some very creative songs. Lastly, it came out just in time for the summer--it's the right soundtrack to play on long road trips or outdoor moments!
