All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
The 24th volume of the Now series predictably relegates the rock selections to the closing third of the program, and that sequence predictably includes the likes of Nickelback (who make their fourth straight appearance, with "If Eveyone Cared") and the All-American Rejects (who make their third appearance since Now, Vol. 21, with "It Ends Tonight"). Newcomers DAUGHTRY appear as the less grizzled, more hungry version of the former, while the Fray's "How to Save a Life" -- which, at the time of this disc's release, was on the brink of being on the Billboard Hot 100 for a full year -- is finally part of the series. The first two-thirds of the disc is another shuffled deck, and the fact that none of the headliners is an MC reflects rap's slide from the top of the singles chart. Ciara's steamy "Promise" and Omarion's frigid "Ice Box" (which out-emos any emo included on past volumes) represent the best pop-oriented R&B of the past several years. The real standout, above all, is Lily Allen's "Smile," an irresistible kiss-off that would make perfect sense at the top of the charts in the middle of summer. Unfortunately, it peaked before spring thaw.

    Average

This is an average entry in the long-running NOW series. I will give a track-by-track review: 1. Fergie-Fergalicious: This song is really annoying and is dismal compared to "London Bridge" or even her new single, "Glamorous". 2. Rihanna-Break It Off: I hate Rihanna's music and Sean Paul's voice just makes the whole thing worse. 3. Nelly Furtado-Say It Right: This song is very atmospheric and is also catchy. It is a good song. 4. Beyonce-Irreplaceable: Again, a dismal song compared to its predecessor"in this case, "Deja Vu", found on NOW 23". 5. Justin Timberlake-My Love: This song is a good choice for a follow-up single to "SexyBack" because it is also danceable and hook-laden. 6. Akon-I Wanna Love You: Song is cute, but gets annoying after a while. 7. Bow Wow-Shortie Like Mine: Great hook, but I'm not a fan of Bow Wow's music. 8. Lloyd-You: Average song, with good sample hook. 9. Ciara-Promise: I've heard better from this artist. 10. Omarion-Ice Box: I liked B2K way better than I like Omarion's solo songs. 11. Chris Brown-Say Goodbye: Sappy crap, compared to uptempo hits like "Run It!" 12. Corinne Bailey Rae-Put Your Records On: Good, but it takes a while for it to grow on you. 13. Lily Allen-Smile: One of the best tracks on this CD, with a simple hook and great lyrics. 14. KT Tunstall-Suddenly I See: Another good female song, though not as good as Allen's tune. 15. Hellogoodbye-Here"In Your Arms": I love this song, which is considered rock even though it has a dance beat. It's still great, though. 16. The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus-The singer's voice could use a little more toughness, but this song is a great, heavy beat. 17. The Fray-How To Save A Life: I like this song. Not as much as "Over My Head", but it's still good. 18. Nickelback-If Everyone Cared: Another great song from Nickelback, who seem to progress with each appearance. 19. Daughtry-It's Not Over: These guys are the next Nickelbacks"ie. they will become a NOW fixture with subsequent appearances". An okay song. 20. The All-American Rejects-It Ends Tonight: A departure of the enjoyable pop-rock of The AAR, as this is slower and more deep than most of their other stuff. It's good.
