Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
A small child refuses to leave on a trip until all favorite toys have been meticulously sorted from the toy box into a traveling bag. The box on the left of each spread empties as the bag on the right fills up. Various toys and a book (entitled Now We Can Go go one by one from box to bag. Then the child is ready. To the youngster hearing this book aloud, the movement of the toy may be too subtle and the illustration too flat to show the acts of taking out and putting in. To the older reader, the spreads may seem redundant or dull. Jonas's previous books have impressed and delighted readers with their illusory worlds and imaginative illustrations; expectations for her new books always run high. Perhaps that's why this book is a little disappointing. (26)

PreS-K Jonas has again combined a simplistic and on-target story line with colorful, non-sexist illustrations to create a prime example of what a book for very young children can and should be. The main character, a curly haired preschooler clad in overalls, is about to embark on an expedition to an unknown destination. In a ploy all too familiar to parents and friends of children, a few inanimate companions must be chosen before going on the trip. A large and amply packed toy box is displayed beside the interior of a bright red tote bag. One by one the objects begin to exchange places. When the entire contents of the toy box have been emptied into the seemingly bottomless recesses of the canvas carryall, the child proclaims, ``Now we can go.'' This lesson in object identification is reassuring and appealing; the illustrations, executed in vivid colors and with simple lines, combined with the easy text, mark this book as a good choice for both story times and for beginning readers.Xenda Casavant, Worcester Public Library, Mass.
