This is an awesome book with lot's of helpful anecdotes and exercises on writing screenplays. Sherry and Laurie have really done their home work and presented a viable book. Kudos to you both! andrea adler Author of the novel and Screenwriter for "Pushing Upward"
I am proud to be a contributor to this collection and I can highly recommend it -- not for me, but for my fellow contributors! My essay on using music to aid your screenwriting process is surrounded by essays from incredibly talented and successful screenwriters and filmmakers. I am humbled by the screenwriters of RAGING BULL, GROUNDHOG DAY, CAPE FEAR, ALI, LOST, TRUE BLOOD and BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA, as well as famous educators like Syd Field and Richard Walter. Some great aspects of the book include: 1) It contains EXERCISES so it's not just a collection of essays but it's essentially a workbook that will get you writing. And the exercises are created by the contributing professionals, *not* the book editors. 2) The chapters are organized under major writing categories, like Structure, Theme, Character, etc. So you can go to a particular topic of interest and read ten different perspectives on it from ten different industry professionals. 3) The sections are also grouped in order of how you write a script: The book begins with "Choosing Your Story" and ends with "How to find an Agent!" The advice here runs the gamut. Finally, as I've always tried to do with my books and blog, it's PRACTICAL. This is not just theory or analysis, it's actual experience from writers/execs/readers/producers in the biz. I hope you get a lot out of it. I did. Sincerely, Daniel Calvisi Author of "Story Maps: How to Write a GREAT Screenplay" (also on B&N; if you're interested, do a search for the title to find it)
This book takes the laymen on a journey of discovery. It helps you practice and learn the proper form and technique, to write an amazing script.
