Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Based on a teleplay by Katherine Standford, the story is a lesson about camouflage. It opens with Sally and Nick playing hide-and seek, but no matter where Sally hides, Nick seems to find her. Then suddenly the Cat in the Hat appears and announces that they are playing his favorite game. He plays with his friend Gecko, so off they fly to the jungle to find the mysterious Gecko and learn what the word camouflage means. Gecko is hiding on a tree limb and his coloring helps him blend right in. How can the kids hope to play hide and seek when they stick out like a sore thumb. Thing One and Thing Two come and help and before you know it, the kids are disguised so well even Gecko cannot spot them. It is a painless lesson and a rhyming text that scans well and does not use awkward text to tell the story. The back cover lists other books that may be of interest in the series. Part of the "Step into Reading" series this is a Step 2 book for those in preschool to grade 1. The focus is basic vocabulary, short sentences, and simple stories. Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
