Laney loves the ocean and is quite happy in her upscale Florida home with her perfect older sister, Angela, and her professional parents. So, when her parents suddenly sell their home and buy a run-down alpaca ranch in rural Eastern Colorado, Laney is overcome with grief and disbelief. How that denial and sadness turn into acceptance, understanding, and even genuine enjoyment make for satisfying and compelling reading. Laney's gradual changes are helped along the way by the unique characters she meets and befriends, the space her wise and loving parents give her to grow in her own ways, the dangers and indignities she overcomes, and the environment itself which, despite its differences from her beloved ocean, has a magnetism and a mystery all its own. The language in this masterfully written book is at once poetic, unselfconscious, and immediate. The story is, too. She wants to be Gina, wants to belong, wants above all to (what else?) learn English. She endures a panicky first day at school, and although Mama attempts to be encouraging, Gina can't--simply can't--speak at all! And there is Priscilla, who has her own social issues in school. Through the story, the tale of the crow and the princess alternately sustains Gina and shows her the way to find her own self in this strange new place. Gr 4-7-Twelve-year-old Laney is about to get the surprise of her life. Her corporate parents trade their office jobs in civilized Tampa Bay, FL, to be alpaca ranchers on the desolate Colorado prairie. She is definitely not ready to be uprooted again-especially since her father had assured her that Tampa Bay was the final move for the family. As soon as school ends, they head west armed only with book knowledge of the animals they are about to care for. Once in Colorado, Laney's parents and "perfect" older sister swoon over the wide-open spaces and new opportunities open to the family. Laney is not so enchanted, and even refuses to unpack her things in her new room. As the summer rolls on, she eventually befriends the "county weirdo," M. J. the Birdhouse Lady, and learns to accept the changes the move has brought. The protagonist's emotions have a realistic ring as she struggles to adapt in this unfamiliar world. The alpacas' fear of their new environment parallels the girl's lost sense of place and home, which is a nice touch.
