Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Mike Seeger once famously said that American folk music is "all the music that fits between the cracks." In this engaging and instructive entry of the "NPR Curious Listener's" series, Lornell (music, George Washington Univ.) explores the history of the music, the kinds of musical styles that provide its rhythms and rhymes, the eclectic range of performers who bring folk music into the pubs and playlists, and some of the songs that have made folk music famous and have influenced numerous other kinds of musicians. He observes that the folk canon is grass-roots music that grows out of a community's desire to preserve its heritage and to celebrate its identity, with antecedents ranging from bluegrass and blues to shaped-note gospel singing and zydeco. Provided are thumbnail biographies of the most significant folk singers, including Lead Belly, Mahalia Jackson, Bob Dylan, and Joan Baez, and descriptions of some of American folk's most famous songs, from "Casey Jones" to "This Land Is Your Land." Lornell's book functions as an introductory guide, much like Robert Cantwell's When We Were Good: The Folk Revival, but it also includes a list of 50 "essential" CDs. Warmly recommended for public libraries.-Henry L. Carrigan Jr., Lancaster, PA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
