Overview

Translated loosely, rai means opinion, referring to the scandalous lyrical content of this controversial brand of Algerian pop. But the rai of superstar Khaled approaches the brain via the booty, and no one is more seductive. Teaming up with pop visionary producer Don Was, Khaled cut loose in the studio and proved himself a master of the dance hall, with ecstatic horns, funky bass, florid keyboards, and relentless drums (played by hand and machine). The result -- 1993 blockbuster N'SSI N'SSI -- handily made Khaled rai's undisputed king (yes, it's a title, and yes, he won it in 1985) and an international star of James Brown-like potency. The opinion expressed in Khaled's rai usually concerns love and sex (wanting it, savoring it, losing it), for which he has been branded a subversive in the eyes and ears of Algerian fundamentalists and forced to live in France. None of this drama is lost on anglophones -- you'll get the point through the hum and throb of N'SSI N'SSI's powerhouse mix, and even more so, through Khaled's fiery singing. There is no mistaking the passion in this man's voice: Khaled burns with the fever of Little Richard onstage at the Apollo.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Tim Sheridan
Many people think Egyptian pop is something you hear through tinny speakers in crowded marketplaces, but with N'ssi N'ssi, Cheb Khaled creates highly polished danceable tracks. Many tunes on this disc are produced by Don Was, which attests to Khaled's international renown.
