Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Spears, a former professor of linguistics who has compiled over two dozen dictionaries, here offers a softbound work for nonnative students of English. Intended as a compact and simplified guide that meets the needs of a variety of users, it presents a basic vocabulary of 6800 words and phrases. The entries are clear and accessible, featuring phonetic pronunciation symbols and grammatical parts of speech along with at least one definition and a sentence demonstrating proper usage in context. Definitions feature simple language with the smallest possible vocabulary and few complicated devices, such as abbreviations and codes. Multiple definitions are included to clarify difficult concepts, while the dictionary pays special attention to elements of language that are difficult to learn, such as plurals and irregular forms, which appear with pronunciation guides and cross references to the relevant full noun, verb, or adverb entry. The work also provides useful spelling rules, lists of irregular or variant plurals and tenses, unusual pronunciation, and noncount nouns, to name a few more features. While the literature contains no shortage of English-language dictionaries, this one certainly fills a specialized need and is thus a welcome addition to a growing market.--Marilyn Rosenthal, Nassau Community Coll.
