Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sally J. K. Davies
This is a revised edition of a 1999 book entitled Quarks and Sparks. In the introduction, the authors state that the intention of their book was to inform the public and help dispel some of the "fears and misunderstanding in the general public's mind due to at lack of information." Despite the very complex subject matter, the book does indeed attempt to explain, in clear language, the history and development of nuclear power. The short sub-chapters and large type font help make the book a little less like an academic text book. The many photographs and illustrations make the pages more interesting, too. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout the text, including many photographs of important scientists working in this field of research, as well as different laboratories and science facilities around the world. The book covers the history of nuclear research, the atomic structure, nuclear fission, nuclear energy, the atomic bomb, the arms race, weapons, the aftermath of nuclear war, the hydrogen bomb, nuclear medicine, the new era of arms control, the advances in nuclear power generation, the advances in nuclear science, cosmic rays, and microwaves from outer space. The authors also include charts comparing seismic graphs of bomb detonation with an earthquake, diagrams of a uranium bomb, a plutonium bomb, Marsden's experiment with gold foil, Thompson's cathode-ray tube, an early version of the cathode-ray tube, a magnetic field, computer-generated images of a particle array, and a simulated Higgs particle. The back matter contains a glossary, a bibliography, a list of related web sites, a list of research organizations, activist organizations, international and governmentorganizations, professional organizations, public policy monitors, and an index. This book is part of Chelsea House Publisher's "Science and Society" series, which includes the titles Agricultural versus Environmental Science, Air Pollution, New Genetics, Nuclear Power, and Potent Natural Medicines.
