Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
It's hard to believe that 25 years have passed since this lil' ol' band from Georgia first made the leap from the thrift store to the stage. But this two-CD set -- a decided step up, quality-wise, from the single-disc best-of that hit stores some years back -- provides a lovingly detailed look back at the full reign of the B-girls and -boys. The set, which takes its name from a campy early-'60s "adult" flick, hops through huge hits like “Love Shack” and “Rock Lobster” but also opens the vaults wide enough to allow some oddities to escape. Beginning with early songs like "52 Girls" and "Dance This Mess Around" (both of which struck listeners like lightning bolts from an...

Beginning with early songs like "52 Girls" and "Dance This Mess Around" (both of which struck listeners like lightning bolts from an alternate universe when they were first unleashed in the late '70s), the collection bops and frugs among the high points of the band's career. That leaves plenty of room for dizzy pop trifles such as "Party Out of Bounds" and "Private Idaho" but also casts some light on more pastoral, pretty ballads (like "She Brakes for Rainbows" and the sway-along "Roam"). Live versions of "Quiche Lorraine” and "Whammy Kiss" give ample evidence of the band's party-starting abilities, while a 1992 remix of "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" sets them on a deep interstellar voyage, thanks to Moby's production wizardry. The 50-page booklet features plenty of pictures of the band’s costume drama as well as liner notes from Michael Azerrad and the B-52’s themselves. Nude on the Moon is guaranteed to have you doing all 16 dances in no time flat.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
The B-52's were one of the great new wave bands, one of the ones who defined the style and cut one of the great records of their time their eponymous debut, an outfit who maintained a dedicated following even as they fell off the radar of critics and hipsters, a group who overcame a tragic loss guitarist Ricky Wilson to make a startling, unpredictable comeback that launched them beyond college radio and to the top of the pop charts. It's a hell of a story, even if the final act was decidedly anticlimatic after one follow-up to the Cosmic Thing comeback, 1992's Good Stuff, the group essentially disappeared apart from an embarrassing version of the Flintstones theme for the 1993 big-screen adaptation, and they're easily one of the more legendary bands of their time. Unfortunately, legend doesn't always translate to great music, and the fact of the matter is that the B-52's really only had two very good records: the transcendent debut and the comeback. The second record had its share of moments, more than the other albums that followed, and there were some sublime cuts scattered among the other records, but by and large they were a band who got by on their brilliant moments -- brilliant moments that were surrounded by competence and mediocrity. It really was the kind of career that could be salvaged and justified by a tremendous double-disc retrospective like Nude on the Moon: The B-52's Anthology, which has a lot of their greatest moments as well as interviews in the comprehensive booklet, great photos, and just the general warm vibe this Georgian band -- perhaps the greatest Georgian musical act this side of Jerry Reed or R.E.M. -- gives off.

From '52 Girls' to 'Love Shack', the hits keep coming and taking you back to the glory days of New Wave music. And with a few live performances of faves like 'Quiche Lorraine' you may have to run out for their latest disc and concert tour. Been missing The B - 52's? With this, you'll never 'Roam' again!

    Full of Standout Tracks......

This group still sounds as fresh and wacky as when I first heard them back in the late 70's & early 80's. At that time it was just so different to what I was into but this group opened my (21 year old mind - back in 79') to the party fun music that was in store. I'd gotten away from this group for many years but I did get to see the 52's up at the Hampton Beach Club Casino last month 7-28-04 and they took us all on a memorable journey of some of their best and it was such a party on the beach!(well pretty close to the beach!) Standout performances of so many of these featured songs. I just wish this group would do some live recordings just to have later done the road (a nice double cd full of their best) I've read they are in the middle of pre-production on a new collection of music for 2005!!!!! that would be great! Thanks Cindy for your autograph after the show, actually it was a handshake,a friend got your last autograph you gave! From Planet Claire to the Love Shack, it was party heaven! Your music is back!!! This collection just sounds perfect.

B-52s are fun, fun, fun and danceable

The B'52s are without doubt, ones of New Wave or Rock music's best groups. Always on the edge of greatness, their music is without a doubt the best bubblegum dance band of all time. Gem's like ''Rock Lobster, Love Shack, Roam, Planet Claire and Song for a future generation'' are outstanding fun and yet such great dance music. The B'52s musical nod to BLONDIE'S lead singer DEBORAH HARRY, is also showcased here with the track ''Debbie'', Blondie also being a standout artist. The B'52s are still a vibrant and creative musical identity, in a time where artists lack identity, not to mention talent.

    Excellent Double CD

This is an excelent compilations for B-52's fans. But there is one black point: the best song is missing (''Topaz''). Anyway, is a great compilation album.

    Fellini At The Beach!

Wow!! This is a wonderful compilation. It seamlessly bridges the gap from the ''early'' B-52's to the ''Cosmic Thing'' era. The Mesopotamia outtake of ''Queen of Las Vegas'' is very interesting and leaves me wanting more music from those sessions. But the real gem is the booklet. It has lots of cool photos, including a shot of Ricky Wilson in a bathing suit looking like the hottie he was, and a great overview of the history of the band and their influences on popular culture and alternative music. After all the B-52's and the rest of the ''new wave'' artists of the late 70's were the true alternatives to the corporate/arena rock of that era.
