Overview

The title is ever-so-slightly misleading, as this collection actually consists of 18 tracks of mainstream Spanish pop. This is not say that there are not certain elements borrowed from flamenco and other more vital styles included herein. Just as the blandest American ditties can still harbor fugitive traces of the blues, jazz, Appalachian sources, or even gospel, the local folklore is occasionally allowed on the furniture here, so long as it doesn't get too messy. But the closest popular offshoot of classical flamenco is the Catalan rhumba as performed by everyone from Peret to the Gipsy Kings, not synth-laced world and Europop-light confections. These amalgams of harmless Triple A clichés mixed with glossy neo-samba, simple African rhythms, defanged R&B, safe salsa, and Kenny G easy jazz-come-MOR are attractive enough in an innocuous way. They are certainly sufficiently exotic to provide a charming, unthreatening atmosphere for a suburban dinner party or turnpike chain restaurant, and nobody will feel guilty about chattering through the entire album. Some of the singers display a passing familiarity with flamenco and rhumba, which is to say that the palmas (handclaps) are sometimes real instead of programmed. It's just that the stuff is so complacent, sugary, and almost totally devoid of musical substance. However, despite the diluted content, the musicianship is uniformly top-drawer and the tunes are well-recorded. But should the listener be in search of actual emotion or heartfelt virtuosity, he or she would do well to look elsewhere.
