All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
Most of the volumes in Universal's Number 1's series recycled oft-compiled material, such as '70s soul and James Brown's chart-toppers. But when this was released, in early 2007, compilations of '90s R&B hits weren't nearly as common as that of '70s funk or new wave. Containing 16 tracks, this disc is filled to near capacity with singles that reached the top of the R&B chart during the '90s. It leans more on the earlier half of the decade and is balanced rather well between sedate ballads and club jams. Some of the more enduring selections include Jodeci's "Stay," Aaron Hall's "Don't Be Afraid," Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It," and Tony! Toni! Toné!'s "It ...

Sizzling and hot album of '90s R&B hits!

This is a sizzling and hot album of '90s R&B hits! There's a good balance of funky numbers to smooth ballads. Many of the numbers average from 4 to 5 minutes, even over 6. Although Secret Garden is from 1989 and hit #1 in 1990, it is a beautiful companion to the 15 '90s songs on this collection. And a rarity of placing Jodeci's Stay with Boyz II Men's hit, two vocal groups of opposite extremes that had hits in 1991 and 1992. The compilation people smartly weaved the '95, '96, '97 and '98 number one hits with the early '90s hits in a seamless and consistent fashion. So Brian McKnight sounds good next to bad boy Bobby Brown and the classy Vanessa Williams ballad weaves well to New Edition's funky Hit Me Off. Tony Toni Tone is well deserved here, the setup to Raphael Saadiq's later hits for him and other artists. Aaron Hall and Montell Jordan, underrated singers in their own right are strongly represented here. The hip-hop beats are a strong influence on a lot of these R&B numbers, especially Soul for Real,Blackstreet, Pebbles "her Giving You the Benefit kicks good and HARD with its basslines and slick sound!", Montell Jordan and Shanice. They actually blend well to these artists who mostly sing solo without the typical collaboration trend so common on 2000s R&B hits. Very consistent, enjoyable and entertaining all at the same time for 75 minutes!
