All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Since Michael Jackson botched his first hits collection by pairing it with a new album of material in a double-disc set, making it considerably less attractive for those legions of listeners who want just a single disc of hits, it's both inevitable and welcome that he attempted another compilation a few years later. This second collection, Number Ones, was released in the wake of the 2000 blockbuster Beatles 1, which rewrote the rules of modern-day hits collections from major artists, since it not only contained a generous, representative cross section of hits, it had a specific focus and did gangbuster business. An avalanche of similar-minded compilations by other titans followed, notably Elvis' 30 #1 Hits and the Rolling Stones' Forty Licks, and MJ's Number Ones is part of that wave. For some artists, sticking to number one hits isn't a bad way to make a collection -- the Beatles are a perfect example, actually, since even if 1 didn't contain such seminal items as "Strawberry Fields Forever," it still offered a full, representative portrait of their career. Jackson doesn't fare so well by the number one rule. First of all, he doesn't strictly follow the number one rule, leaving behind the number one hit duet "Say Say Say" with Paul McCartney, substituting a 1981 live version of "Ben" for the original hit, adding "Break of Dawn," an Invincible album cut never released as a single, and including "Thriller," "Smooth Criminal," and "Earth Song," none of which hit number one, and the latter wasn't even released as a single in the U.S. there is, of course, the requisite previously unreleased song, the OK slow jam "One More Chance". Then, there's the fact that Thriller changed the business, inaugurating the era of the blockbuster album that rode the charts for years, spinning off hit singles every quarter. Thriller generated tons of hits -- six of its nine tracks hit the charts, but only two of them hit number one. Its successor, Bad, had seven of its 11 songs hit the charts one other, the CD bonus cut "Leave Me Alone," was a staple on MTV, and of those, five peaked at number one. So, by sticking to number ones, and adding "Smooth Criminal," this collection skews very heavily toward Bad, at times playing like an expanded reissue with bonus tracks. This may be a fairly accurate reading of chart positions, but it doesn't result in a particularly representative collection, since the brilliant Off the Wall is granted only two songs, leaving behind such charting hits as "Off the Wall" and "She's Out of My Life" both gold singles, mind you, and Thriller is represented by only three tracks, with such defining songs as "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'," "Human Nature," "PYT Pretty Young Thing," and "The Girl Is Mine" being left behind. These two albums are the core of Jackson's legacy, and it simply feels wrong that Number Ones gives them short shrift. Dangerous also is neglected, providing just one selection, when on the whole it had far more memorable songs than HIStory or Invincible. But these problems are inherent with any collection that concentrates just on the charts, not the music that got the songs on the charts in the first place. And while Number Ones contains enough of the big songs to recommend it for those listeners who are looking just for a cross section of the biggest hits from Jackson's career, it is also true that the perfect Michael Jackson hits collection has yet to be assembled. Maybe next time, particularly if he's granted an entry into Sony's generally excellent The Essentials series.

While this set isn't comprehensive, it does testify to the myriad vocal abilities of the mature MJ.

If you're looking for the hits

This is it! Afforable, with barely (if any filler). This album flys from start to finish - starting in the "Off the Wall" era, and ending with a a fitting closing, "Ben" (Live).
If you are just becoming an MJ fan after his untimely passing, this gem is where to start.
It showcases Jackson's talent, and proves he invented the blue print of pop music, that acts like Justin Timberlake snatched up and ran with.
Enjoy this, from start to finish.

    Awesome CD

The packaging is "green", meaning, made of recycle paper. I love that. This is one CD I wished I had own sooner. I will miss this GREAT Entertainer.
My first introduction to Michael Jackson was his album, "Off the Wall." Michael at his best.

    REST IN PEACE MICHAEL JACKSON

No matter what he did in his private life, this man is an icon. His voice, music and dancing is the best we will ever see. I forgot his voice and I bought this CD because of the number one hits to remember, and when I listened to it, it was all bought back to me. Michael Jackson will always be the King of Pop. There will be no that can replace him.

    A Thriller !!!

Michael Jackson's Greatest Hits, including many Famous Dance Numbers ( The Hustle. ) like : Rock With You, Billie Jean, and the Fabulous Thriller, one of the largest releases of all time. The only thing I wish was that the Song He did with Sir Paul ( McCartney. ) " The Girl is Mine. " was included. Altogether a Fabulous C/D - A Thriller.

    Rest in Peace Michael Jackson

I liked this CD but Michael Jackson has so many hit songs that this CD is just a tease to all the other songs that are out there that are just as good as these songs if not better. Nonetheless, it is a good CD that just shows how talented Michael Jackson was as a singer.

    WANDERFULLY MAGNIFECENT

I literally LOVE Michael Jackson. I am a HUGE FAN and i enjoy his music alot. It is very hard to accept that he has left us but he is now on a better place and we no that he feels way better. At least he is in a place were the press cant reach him. I dont care about what the press say because only HE knows the truth and nobody else. His children are very beautiful and i only wish that i could have mett him before he has passed. But his legendary songs live on and no other dancer/singer can be like him!!!!

    R.I.P MICHAEL JACKSON

This collection hassome of his best music on there and this is something not to be missed. Sure hid did something wrong, but then again aren't all musicians strange. The king of pop knows how to sing a beat and doesn't get half naked to do it. He is an excellent musician and I hope he writes more songs

6 MILLION NUMBER ONES AND COUNTING!!

We all know about MJ's court case, so let's just talk about the music.Number Ones is a great Michael Jackson album because the edits are pretty good considering they just take out the interludes so you can hear mostly just the songs instead. And "One More Chance" is a great song to add to your king of pop collection. Plus, recently this album has reached worldwide sales of 6 million! That means Michael's first and only number one hits collection package is still selling strong. Go Michael!

    NUMBER ONES IS #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a really addictive album. Even though the songs included are not all number ones and some of them are edited, is is an overall great package. It includes his absolute best material plus a new song, "One More Chance", and a live version of "Ben".

    Always the King Of Pop!

We all know what's goin' on with MJ, so let's not go there. Let's focus on the music. Number Ones is a compilation of classic MJ songs, with a new song, "One More Chance". Some of MJ's classic tracks are on this album, "Billie Jean", "Thriller", "Beat It", "The Way You Make Me Feel",etc. The only problem I have with this CD is that a lot of the songs are edited, which takes away from the song. I was surprised that there weren't more songs from the "Dangerous" album on this CD, like "Jam", "Remember The Time", or "Heal The World". This is a great CD for causal MJ fans, or people who are just beggining to get into MJ's music, but for hardcore fans, I would say skip this one. Remember, YOU ARE INNOCENT TIL' PROVEN GUILTY!

    NO WAY

After the arrest warrant issued for child molestation, there is no way I'll be buying Jackson's latest album. I'd encourage everyone to boycott this loser's works. His early work was great, but his degeneracy has overshadowed everything he's done.

    Excellent

Michael Jackson is a superb artist who has created outstanding number one hits throughout his career. Each song shows his greatness as an artist in the world as we know it, pop. I bought this the day it came out and haven't taken it out of my cd player yet. A must have for all Michael Jackson fans!
