All Music Guide - Uncle Dave Lewis
Nun klingen sie wieder Now They Sound Again is the provisional title given to a series of recordings from the Japanese label Camerata devoted to concerts from the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien Society for the Friends of Music. This is a private society in Vienna that devotes itself to the preservation of musical artifacts, initially founded in 1811. It has quite an extensive collection of vintage musical instruments, and since 2003 has hosted annual public concerts featuring instruments that it has saved from oblivion. Nun klingen sie wieder: Historische Musikinstrumente aus den Sammlungen der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien is taken from the first concert series the Society held, and features a Domenico Pesaurensis cembalo made in 1546 and two fortepianos, a Matthaus Andreas Stein instrument dating from 1825 and one from Anton Walter & Son from between 1805 and 1810. Keyboard players Johann Sonnleitner and Malcolm Bilson are both prominent names in period keyboard performance, and though she sounds a little matronly here in Franz Joseph Haydn's cantata "Arianna a Naxos," mezzo-soprano Elisabeth von Magnus comes similarly well equipped for the task. Nevertheless, the recording, made by Viennese classical radio station Radio Stephansdom, is of a quality on par with university-made classical recordings from the 1960s -- recorded in concert, it's full of extraneous noise; footsteps, things falling to the wooden floor in the room and perhaps even some noise from the mechanism of the instruments themselves. What's worse is that the instruments in use are so quiet that any additional racket is amplified 50- to 100-fold so that the sound of someone dropping a program to the floor is, through headphones at least, like getting kicked in the head. Moreover, the first two opening tracks are recorded at a ridiculously low volume that is not normalized to the signal from the remainder of the disc, so track three comes booming forth like gangbusters, and one will be forced to make a dive for the volume knob. This is a pity, as there's nothing quite like the sound of that Pesaurensis cembalo with its sour, mean-tone tuning and the totally unpredictable behavior of its harmonic series. It doesn't matter how well the pieces are performed, as when the recording is this bad, you can't tell anyway. Oh well -- better luck next annum.
