Children's Literature - Kathleen Isaacs
This entry in the "Medieval Lives" series follows an imaginary unnamed 14th-century English woman, daughter of a merchant and educated in a nunnery, who chooses religious life, becoming a nun. A brief introduction, similar to that of others in the series, explains the role of Christianity in medieval Europe, the nature of religious communities and their attraction for women. The author then describes the woman's early life—birth and childhood—before going on to her life in the nunnery as postulant, novice and eventually cellaress of her convent before her relatively early death. He includes chapters about daily convent routines, spiritual life and connections to the world outside. As is customary in the series, each double-page spread covers a separate topic, and includes a medieval fact box and quotation or two from the times. Illustrations include reproductions of medieval paintings and manuscripts as well as photographs of objects, with the institutional source, but not the title or provenance, provided in picture credits on the verso. The dates of the illustrations and quotations are not always clear. The definition of "medieval" here includes material and information from the 12th to the 16th century and all over Europe; readers may find the variety of styles and settings confusing. Some English usage ("tenement") may also have to be explained. A glossary, suggested websites, timeline and index plus a page listing contents for each title in the 6-book series makes this particularly useful in classrooms where this time period is taught.
