Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Gretchen Schumacher, PhD, GNP-C, FNP, NP-C(Michigan State University College of Nursing)
Description: This is the fourth edition of a book on teaching and learning principles in healthcare, learner characteristics and teaching/learning strategies, and evaluation methods. The book is appropriate for both academic and clinical environments. The previous edition was published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose is to address current teaching/learning principles in the context of a nursing faculty shortage, consumer health literacy issues, advances in technology, Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations for the future of nursing, and changing demographics. These objectives are worthy given the dynamic healthcare environment and the important focus on outcomes, both in teaching and learning and in practice. Evidence-based principles for teaching and learning are needed in both clinical and academic environments.
Audience: This book is intended for use by nurses teaching in academic programs, staff nurses practicing in any setting as caregivers or as staff educators, and upper-level undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
Features: This is an excellent, updated overview of the education of nurses and patients in a dynamic healthcare system. An important focus is the IOM report and the QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) foundations and evidence in teaching/learning principles. Current case studies and thought-provoking review questions throughout the book develop concepts regarding learning characteristics and barriers to learning. Strategies for successful teaching and learning are discussed, including behavioral objectives, methods of instruction, and learning evaluation. Updated state of the evidence helps readers to view information in light of current evidence.
Assessment: This is a classic in its field, appropriately updated in the context of a dynamic healthcare environment. Nurse educators in both academic and clinical settings would benefit from understanding these concepts. It is a comprehensive resource for anyone facing the challenges of teaching and learning in healthcare with a desire to develop skills that are grounded in evidence and results.

This book has some valuable info but it directed more at education in the hospital versus academia. Although the section on learning objectives is good, most of the content is based on patient teaching and not student teaching.
