Description: This is a second edition of a drug reference book that includes approximately 1,000 drugs listed in alphabetical order by generic name. The following information is provided for each drug entry: generic and brand names; pharmacologic and therapeutic classifications; controlled substance schedule, if appropriate; pregnancy risk category; how supplied; indications; route and dosage; pharmacodynamics; pharmacokinetics; contraindications and precautions; interactions; effects on diagnostic tests; adverse reactions; overdose and treatment; and special considerations. In addition, there is a separate section of pharmacologic class entries that allows the reader to compare the effects and uses of drugs within each class. The appendixes include information on a wide variety of subjects such as: indications and dosages of common topical drugs; a chart of antimicrobial drugs indicating which drugs are used in first; and second line management.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide detailed information on drugs in current clinical use so that they can be efficiently and safely prescribed.
Audience: The intended audience is the advanced practice nurse and other health professionals who prescribe drugs.
Features: Some of the unique features of this reference are the individual entries that describe major pharmacologic classes, the broad listing of indications that includes clinically approved but unlabeled uses, and specific recommendations for use in renal failure. Adverse reactions that are common or life-threatening are highlighted and there are charts and tables that compare uses, effects, or dosages of drugs within a class. A photo guide provides full-color photographs of more than 300 frequently prescribed tablets and capsules.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive reference that encompasses the medications frequently prescribed by advanced practice nurses. All the information necessary to safely prescribe and monitor the medication is provided. It is both easy to use and to understand. The appendixes and pharmacological class entries are very helpful.
