More About This Textbook
Overview
The Nurse's 3-Minute Clinical Reference is organized into four sections—Disorders, Treatments, Procedures, and Diagnostic Studies—with entries within each section organized alphabetically. Each Disorders and Procedures entry is six columns on a two-page spread; each Diagnostic Studies and Treatments entry is three columns on one page. Information is provided in brief bulleted points.
Part I covers more than 300 acute and chronic health problems including the newest conditions such as metabolic syndrome. Part II covers more than 50 treatments; Part III, more than 75 procedures; and Part IV, more than 130 diagnostic tests. Entries in each section follow a consistent format.
Editorial Reviews
From The Critics
Reviewer: Carole Ann Kenner, PhD, MSN, BSN(Northeastern University Bouve College of Health Sciences)Description: This is a quick reference book aimed at decreasing patient errors by increasing nursing knowledge.
Purpose: The purpose is to give nurses a complete, quick reference to the most common conditions, treatments, and procedures in a format that will take three minutes or less to read.
Audience: The audience is practicing nurses and nursing students.
Features: The four sections of the book cover disorders, treatments, procedures, and diagnostic studies. The format of each section is similar starting with an overview, assessment, treatment, nursing considerations, patient teaching, and resources. Procedures vary slightly, where equipment and special considerations as well as document sections are included. Essential steps in preparing the patient and conducting the procedure or test are included. In the case of a diagnostic test, the interpretation is offered as normal or abnormal findings. The book uses a column format so that the information is easy to read and quickly accessible. The listing of resources gives readers ample opportunity to get more information on a particular subject.
Assessment: There are other consult books, but this one keys into the Institute of Medicine Reports and patient safety. It includes up-to-date information on anthrax and genetic conditions such as Nezelof syndrome and Niemann-Pick disease. Comparable books such as the 5-Minute Clinical Consult annual series by Domino (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins) are more geared to medical practice and disease entities. This consult book is much more nurse-friendly and is a good addition to any nursing library.
