From The CriticsReviewer: Penny Wolfe Moore, RNC, PhD (Southwestern Adventist University)
Description: Wound care and wound care products are described in detail in this book. A system of tabs facilitates the location of specific information.
Purpose: To concisely integrate wound care principles and practices for all wound care professionals is the author's goal. This worthwhile objective has been met, but more emphasis is placed on wound care products than the principles and practices.
Audience: This book is described as "a must for all members of the multidisciplinary wound care team, as well as for students of medicine, nursing, and physical therapy," which indicates the author's thoughts about the target audience. I see it as even more useful for the practitioner who only occasionally must provide wound care and needs a quick reference. The credibility of the author is not well established. Most of the book represents information from product manufacturers.
Features: In Part I the fundamentals of wound healing are presented. In this third edition the author presents new information on principles for establishing a wound management system. Also included is a step-by-step pathway to treatment options and a discussion on legal and reimbursement issues. In Part II a quick reference for the most widely used wound care products is provided. Part III is a short chapter on additional dressings and products. Pictures of the packaged products are presented. There are a few black-and-white illustrations. The only color picture is on the back cover to illustrate the stages of pressure ulcers. Unfortunately the colors are not real to life.
Assessment: This publication compares favorably to others I have seen on wound care products. It is most useful as a reference but products appear on the market so frequently that a book of this type becomes outdated quickly. Most of the content is direct from the product manufacturer so information from the experience with use in a clinical area is not always presented.
