Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Sally Northam, RN, PhD (Texas Woman's University)
Description: This third edition text clearly presents nearly 200 clinical procedures with step by-step instructions.
Purpose: The purpose is to create a reference for nurses to consult for procedural information. Succinct, up-to-date clinical references are valuable to nurses. The tips for cost-cutting, home health, transcultural nursing, and prioritizing nursing diagnoses to aid care delivery are especially important for nurses in today's healthcare arena.
Audience: The book is designed to serve both students in all types of educational programs and practicing nurses in any clinical setting. The organized layout with clear headings lends itself well to both audiences. This third edition lists two primary authors and seven additional contributors, all of whom appear qualified.
Features: Twenty-six references are listed for nearly 200 procedures and only a few references are primary research references. Although limited in number, the illustrations are clear and helpful. The book is attractive, spiral bound, and light enough to be easily carried or placed in an oversized pocket.
Assessment: Overall, this is a handy clinical guide with valuable information and troubleshooting pointers. The procedures for endotracheal and tracheal suctioning include saline lavage, ambu ventilation of ventilator patients, and repetition of suctioning two to three times. These practices have been questioned in recent research. NG tube placement verification via aspiration reflects recent research, but auscultation to verify tube placement has been unreliable in recent research.
