Editorial Reviews

Krysia Warren Hudson
This is a "need to know" drug handbook for nurses. It is intended to be a quick drug reference. The intended audience is nurses, but this book can be useful for other professions or educated lay people as well. The drug information is listed alphabetically in an easy-to-read format. Drug information such as common adverse and life threatening effects are italicized and bolded to help readers prioritize care. This also helps with critical thinking skills. Another feature that is uncommon but useful is the "Adjust A Dose." This function takes into account that many clients are older and that many drugs need adjustment. The drug photo guide is also nice. However, the cultural aspects of drug therapy appears to be inappropriate. It is very hard to generalize about cultures, and the attempt made here may be considered offensive to some individuals. The CD-ROM is nice; it offers tests about drug categories. Installation is easy and I find it very nice. This feature would be particularly good for a nursing student. I feel this is one of the best drug handbooks available. The format could be improved by adding color, and the content could be improved by adding information on the use of herbal medicines and their interactions with current pharmaceuticals. The CD-ROM is stellar!

    Expectations were high, but disappointed.

I've always purchased the Nursing Drug Handbook every few years & would recommend it to other nurses. I really liked the idea of purchasing the CD-ROM having quick access to the drugs on the computer. There is a major bug in the system. After looking up one drug it stalls & I've had to reset the computer. The other major problem is after looking up a drug or taking a test & I attempted to go back to the main menu, the computer crashes & tells me that I turned off the system incorrectly. Your wasting a lot of time just waiting for the computer to reset itself & get back on. Someone did not perform their job in the quality control department.
