Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Anne Findeis, MS, RN (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing)
Description: In addition to basic skills, this seventh edition includes nursing care and skills specific to acute, long-term, and home care settings as well as care of obstetrical and pediatric patients. The section on anatomy and physiology uses a systems approach that also includes common disorders and related care appropriate to the nursing assistant. A section called Advanced Procedures includes sterile technique and tracheostomy care. Response to Emergencies deals with life-threatening issues.
Purpose: The purpose is to help teachers guide students to develop the knowledge and skills required to meet competency standards and meet OBRA requirements for nursing assistant certification.
Audience: This book is intended for use by individuals seeking training as nursing assistants or seeking to develop specific nursing assistant skills.
Features: The illustrations and table of contents are well done and very thorough. Unique features include (1) procedures are referenced to the laser disk and videotape resources; (2) OBRA required procedures are identified; and (3) the extensive glossary of terms includes phonetic pronunciation and definitions.
Assessment: This book is a fine addition to nursing assistant textbooks. It helps to fill the need for specialized knowledge and skills needed by nursing assistants who work in acute care and home settings. Written at a basic level, the nature and wording is professional in tone and scope. The content focuses on understanding basic disease processes and abnormal findings aswell as interventions appropriate to the nursing assistant role. A major appeal for instructors is the coordination of this textbook as part of a learning system that includes student and instructor workbooks, test banks, videos (12), laser disks (5), transparency masters, and anatomy/physiology slides. This book is appropriate for use by libraries, bookstores, individual instructors, or any institution that uses or trains nursing assistants.
