Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Kathryn Kushto-Reese, MS, RN (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This concise review of common mathematics principles used in dosage calculations for nurses provides many helpful practice problems. The previous edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: This updated review of medication dosage calculations uses more inclusive explanations and examples to help the learner. Additions and revisions have been made in order to relate to current practice techniques. The author's objectives for the book are met.
Audience: This book, written at the request of nurse educators, can be useful to nurses and students. As a nurse educator, I agree that it can be useful to both students and nurses, especially new nurses. The author has written several editions of the book.
Features: The book covers basic mathematics skills and provides practice with feedback both in the form of answers and explanations. I was particularly impressed with the bullets or captions in the chapters that stressed relevant information related to current practice. I also liked the estimation activities that help the learner to use critical thinking skills that could enable them to catch an error and possibly prevent a tragedy in medication dosage. The illustrations are very clear. A conversion for pounds to kilograms is still necessary to include for pediatrics, as well as the BSA formula instead of just the Nomogram chart. I don't think all of the fraction exercises are necessary.
Assessment: The book is excellent for a short practice of the mathematics skills necessary for dosage calculations. It does not have the depth of medication information that would be necessary for a student in a nursing program who is still learning basic information. It does justify replacing the older editions especially because of the updates in current practice, requests for certain types of problems and explanations, and relevant new information. It would be especially helpful as a small pocket reference. I think it would be very helpful for a new student to have as dosage practice book or for a new nurse as a review.
From the Publisher
"I welcome the 7th edition of this brilliant book and highly recommend it.

The arithmetic is based on calculations that are regularly used by the caring profession, namely kilograms, grams, milligrams, micrograms, litres and millilitres. The authors demonstrate several methods of converting these various measurements into each other achieved by worked examples. These are then followed by numerous questions for the readers to answer themselves; the answers are at the back of the book.

This invaluable 'hands on' book should be read as a refresher by anyone who is involved in medication and is a must for those who are new to the caring profession".
