Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Cara M Gallegos, BSN, MSN (Presbyterian Healthcare Services)
Description: Although this book is titled Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient, several chapters are dedicated to neonates. Typically, one works with either neonates or in pediatrics.
Purpose: The purpose is to assist pediatric surgical nurses in providing expert care for children undergoing surgery. The book is definitely needed. There are few resources for pediatric nurses. The book meets the author's objectives, although one cannot become an expert by reading a text.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for pediatric nurses. However, I would argue that it is more appropriate for student or novice nurses.
Features: In general, this book provides a wealth of knowledge on a huge subject. The examples of teaching sheets and the resources that the authors provide are excellent. Color should be added to improve appearance. Many good pictures are difficult to see because of the lack of color. Some of the references are a little out of date. For example, when checking for NGT placement, auscultation is not recommended. Although it is at the bottom of the list, there should be a statement to that effect. Additional topics, such as congenital heart defects and family centered care could be covered.
Assessment: This is a useful resource for novice pediatric nurses.
