Overview

This valuable resource provides the nurse manager or clinician with an informative guide on how to assess an organization's readiness for nursing case management, prepare a plan to achieve necessary changes, implement the plan, and evaluate its success. Like the first edition, the second edition not only describes the historical development of case management, but also provides useful examples from institutions that have successfully implemented a nursing case management model. New chapters address topics such as the current managed care environment, information technology and ethical issues. A new unit, "Clinical Outcomes", addresses the increasing demand for information on measurable outcomes.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Laurel A. Eisenhauer, RN, PhD, FAAN (Boston College School of Nursing)
Description: This book focuses on case management as a professional nursing role. This second edition adds more material related to recent trends in managed care, outcomes evaluation and research, ethical issues, and the implications of information technology.
Purpose: The main purpose of this book is to discuss the "issues shaping case management today." This is accomplished in this well-documented book through extensive references to the literature as well as practical examples of care planning forms and documents used in various healthcare agencies.
Audience: Although unspecified by the authors, the audience would appear to be nurse managers, nursing administrators, and clinical nurse specialists considering the implementation of nursing case management.
Features: There are several useful diagrams and tables; of particular value are the many different forms and documents illustrating how case management has been implemented in a variety of settings. Also included are nursing care maps in addition to those used by other specialties. It is a convenient size for reading and handling.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for nurses interested in knowing more about case management as a professional nursing model and as a method of providing efficient and cost-effective care. It discusses issues and trends affecting case management as well as the planning, implementation, and evaluation of case management. It is well written, and extensively documents trends and research on case management. It also contains useful examples of documents used in various healthcare institutions.
