Overview

NURSING DIAGNOSIS HANDBOOK, fifth edition, is a convenient reference to help nursing students and practicing nurses select a nursing diagnosis and write plans of care with ease and confidence. The book provides care plans for every NANDA diagnosis and provides a quick access index of appropriate nursing diagnoses for over 1,200 clinical entities including signs and symptoms, medical diagnoses, and surgeries across the life span. The revision of this successful book will incorporate all of the new and revised NANDA diagnoses from the 2000 meeting, as well as further integration of both the NIC and NOC taxonomies. The new edition will also indicate evidence-based interventions and rationales with a margin icon, and a two-color design will readily identify important content and increase ease of use. A new MERLIN website will provide students with the opportunity to create customized plans of care for their clients.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Carole A. Kenner, PhD, RN, FAAN (Council of International Neonatal Nurses)
Description: This guide for practicing nurses and students who need to establish nursing diagnoses and write plans of care is easy to use and contains a wealth of information. It reflects significant changes since the 1999 edition.
Purpose: This is a quick reference manual for developing and implementing the nursing process. NANDA, NIC, and NOC language classifications systems form the backbone of this edition. The authors meet their worthy objectives.
Audience: The target audience is practicing nurses and students. The authors are well known experts in the field of nursing process.
Features: The book outlines the nursing diagnoses as they relate to the overall nursing process, and the nursing diagnoses to assessment findings. The first section establishes the basis for the remainder of the book. The reader can then take assessment data-symptoms and look up possible specific diagnoses based on these findings. After completing this step, the reader is guided through the nursing process and the writing of the care plan for implementation. Interventions are coded according to independent or collaborative functions. The need for evidence-based practice is threaded throughout the material. Inclusion of clinical guidelines that are evidence-based and published by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is wonderful feature. The sections on NANDA reflect the newest changes to the taxonomy. Culturally competent care is stressed as well. When there are specific needs of the geriatric population, for example, these are highlighted. Unfortunately, the same is not always done for the pediatric population. The inclusion of commonly used acryonms is another unique feature. A good pedagogical tool is the use of colored boxes to stress the NOC and NIC sections that may be new to many readers. This feature will also help the faculty who have not had to incorporate this language into the nursing process before this time. The book reflects new technology through a companion website, which helps the reader to keep up-to-date with changes that might occur after the publication date.
Assessment: This book is very complete. The authors and contributors are experts in the field of nursing process. The fifth edition has made significant strides to reflect the newest trends in nursing care: holistic appropriate, pain management, NOC, NIC, culturally competent care, inclusion of computer technology, and appendixes that facilitate the book's use and promote critical thinking. Use of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as a method of arranging nursing diagnoses is another unique feature that helps the reader prioritize care of patients. Most of these features are not included in other nursing process/diagnosis books. This edition makes significant strides in deliverying dry content in a concise, useable manner.

This book is fantastic.  For the nursing program, it is on the required textbook list, and understandably so.  This book is full of information on NANDA labels, and essential in creating thorough nursing care plans.  It is a great reference book for anyone in a nursing program.

    Highly recommend

This book was purchased for my daughter. She says it has been the best book ever and would not have been able to get through clinicals without it! Very descriptive and easy to read.

    This is an excellent book!!

This is a great book. I like this book alot. It was a big help in preparing all my concept maps. It is a very easy book to use. It gives evidence-based interventions and rationales for each nursing diagnosis. Everything I needed was in this one book. It cut down the amount of time it normally takes me to do a concept map. I don't think I would have been able to do my concept map without this book. It was such a relief when I first used this book. It should be a requirement for all nursing students. I definitely give it an A+.

    Easy to use and understand

Out of all the care plan books I have looked at, I find this is the easiest to use. Several of my fellow students agree. Also, the definitions in this text seem more relevant and descriptive than other texts. This text has made care plans much easier!

    Awesome book!

This is a great book. I just started back into nursing school after 26 years of nursing and haven't written nursing diagnosis and care plans in that long. I had no idea what a NANDA diagnosis was. This book has been a great help to get me through the class. It has everything I need to understand NANDA including NIC and NOC. I would recommend this to anyone doing care plans.
