Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Carole Ann Kenner, PhD, RN, FAAN (The College of New Jersey)
Description: This book guides the reader through the application of the nursing process. The last edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: The purpose is to act as a reference for planning care by applying the nursing process. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience: The intended audience is practicing nurses and nursing students. The authors are very credible.
Features: The book is divided into three sections: the first explains the nursing process, the second is devoted to nursing diagnoses, and the final section acts as a guide to planning nursing care. In addition, the book includes appendices on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, Gordon's Functional Patterns, and the Children's Immunization Schedule. Included is an emphasis on evidence-based nursing (EBN) as highlighted by evidence-based (EB) or EBN considerations when interventions are discussed. There are also codings to indicate independent and collaborative practice as related to interventions. Color boxes help readers find selected diagnoses or important steps in the nursing process.
Assessment: There are many books that address the nursing process yet few include EBN to the degree that this book does. This addition more than justifies the new edition.
