Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Carole A. Kenner, PhD, RN, FAAN (The College of New Jersey)
Description: This book, one in the growing number of nursing diagnosis texts, is evidence-based. This eighth edition updates the 2006 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a guide for practicing nurses and students that plan care using nursing diagnoses. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience: The audience is practicing nurses and student nurses.
Features: The book's three sections cover nursing diagnosis and the nursing process; nursing diagnoses; and plans of care and include revisions from NANDA, culturally appropriate interventions, and pediatric interventions. This book bases interventions on levels of evidence. Boxed features and symbols indicate geriatric or cultural considerations. There is an accompanying EVOLVE course with exercises that give students the opportunity to practice creating care plans. Electronic resources are available for faculty to enhance teaching-learning.
Assessment: The difference between this and most other books on nursing diagnoses, such as Carpenito-Moyet, Nursing Diagnosis: Application to Clinical Practice, 11th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2006), and Ralph and Taylor's Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual, 6th edition (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2005), is that it is focused not on clinical application but rather on evidence to support interventions and outcomes. This edition brings the content up-to-date and certainly enhances its coverage of cultural differences and includes the pediatric age group. Most of the references are older than five years, but for the most part do represent good additional materials.

This is a great book. I like this book alot. It was a big help in preparing all my concept maps. It is a very easy book to use. It gives evidence-based interventions and rationales for each nursing diagnosis. Everything I needed was in this one book. It cut down the amount of time it normally takes me to do a concept map. I don't think I would have been able to do my concept map without this book. It was such a relief when I first used this book. It should be a requirement for all nursing students. I definitely give it an A+.

This is a great book. I just started back into nursing school after 26 years of nursing and haven't written nursing diagnosis and care plans in that long. I had no idea what a NANDA diagnosis was. This book has been a great help to get me through the class. It has everything I need to understand NANDA including NIC and NOC. I would recommend this to anyone doing care plans.

This book is fantastic.  For the nursing program, it is on the required textbook list, and understandably so.  This book is full of information on NANDA labels, and essential in creating thorough nursing care plans.  It is a great reference book for anyone in a nursing program.

Out of all the care plan books I have looked at, I find this is the easiest to use. Several of my fellow students agree. Also, the definitions in this text seem more relevant and descriptive than other texts. This text has made care plans much easier!

I had this when I was a nursing student a few years ago, this is by far one of the greatest tools for learning how to make nursing diagnoses. This book helped me with nearly all of my essays, too.
