Purpose: The purpose is to provide nursing students with an understanding of a variety of ethical issues in nursing from a humanistic perspective. This perspective is important in nursing because it emphasizes the worth of each individual and allows nurses to care for patients in a holistic manner. This book also aims to help practicing nurses integrate ethical principles, theories, and decision-making skills into their everyday practice.
Audience: It is intended for nursing students and practicing nurses. The book is informative for students who have no previous nursing or ethics experience, but also offers case studies and ethical reflections that are thought-provoking for experienced nurses. Both authors are experienced in nursing ethics.
Features: An introduction to ethics and bioethics begins the book, which then proceeds to cover a variety of ethics topics in nursing including reproductive issues, adolescents, and issues in end-of-life care. It also includes appendixes such as the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements and a glossary. A student companion website provides interactive study aids for each chapter.
Assessment: This is an excellent textbook for nursing students. It offers many teaching techniques to meet the different learning needs of individual students, such as ethical reflections and case studies, throughout the chapters. Updates to the pedagogy from the previous edition include "ethical formations," boxes that highlight interesting stories, quotes, or cases specific to the field of nursing. The student companion website, also an update, is a great additional resource for students.
